Garter Toss

Since we are on the subject of weddings, what do you guys think of the garter toss? Would you do it at your own wedding?

Did the garter thing at our wedding.

I kinda threw it WAY off and it landed in my friends drink. He did not want to 'participate' because he was getting married in 2 weeks and wanted to give someone else the chance.

if the guy can find and get the garter from under my dress in the previous thread then more power to him. Otherwise...he's out of luck.

I think its a fun tradition and I'm doing it.

That said, I've seen this done tastefully and inappropriately. For instance, when the garter is retrieved from my leg, I will have (before the event) positioned it RIGHT above my knee, not way up on my thigh. And when the garter is placed on the bouquet-catching-female, same deal. It should feel funny and silly, not sexy and scandalous. I'm sure not everyone will agree with me but that's my personal take on it.

I've been to three solidly-Catholic weddings in the past four weeks. At not one of them was there a garter toss, and the weddings were still very awesome.

My opinion: nothing to gain from something that is potentially scandalous.

See I think it's fine for the groom to take the garter off the bride's knee, because that is consentual and they know each other, but the garter catcher and the bouquet catcher probably don't know each other (or are related!) so that's a little weird.

Yeah... Might be better to do the garter-on-the-guy bit if they're adults, and skip that second part altogether if the girl who catches the bouquet IS a girl and not a woman!

Now, I'm having a lot of couples at my wedding. Most of our friends are in long-term relationships or are engaged (or married). How 'bout then?

We did the garter, and absolutely nothing was revealed (except for maybe my ankle ). We didn't put it on the bouquet-catcher's leg, though, which is a good thing considering a 15-yr-old caught the bouquet.

Why not have a little fun.... If I can watch the olympic swimming competitions without falling into sin, then why not watch a garter toss? AND>>>> It would be on my thigh where a Garter should be.

Scandalous?

Anyone here who thinks a Garter toss is scandalous better never go swimming in Europe because you see EVERYTHING, not just a leg, or an ankle EVERYTHING.

good point. I personally don't see it as scandalous, really. Even with the garter on my thigh, though, only my ankle was shown, because my husband didn't lift the dress at all to get the garter. So really, it shouldn't be an issue, IMO. And we had some weird Bing Crosby song playing, so people were really more focused on that (we used my grandfather's juke box for the reception, and so all the music had to be on 45s. Limited selection, but it was fun).

I never thought it looked fun. Definitely wouldn't do it at my wedding.
