MrsFrozen
Frozencell and I love to watch movies, but there are not many that we find suitable. It seems that with every movie, they always do one little thing to make it objectionable. There is almost always one scene where they break one of the 10 Commandments and we're supposed to accept it as okay. Premarital sex is the biggest one. Can anyone recommend some acceptable movies geared toward an adult audience? The other night we rented Ice Age. It was a cute movie and we liked it, but I don't want to go through the rest of my life watching childrens' movies. I also heard there is a list of movies that the Church finds acceptable. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks and God bless! :D

Paladin D
- Star Wars movies - LOTR films - You've Got Mail (has mention of cyber sex) - Cast Away? To be honest, most films these days have at least one objectable scene. It's extremely hard to find 100% clean movies unless you want to watch children movies. Thy Geekdom Come
I know a few very good classics...they're very Catholic oriented, but I don't think you have to be Catholic to enjoy them... Going My Way with Bing Crosby The Bells of St. Mary's with Bing Crosby A decent guide for this (though I sometimes disagree) is the movie rating system from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Look up a movie you are going to watch here: Archived Movie Reviews or a movie currently out in theatres here: Current Movie Reviews or go through the list of the other lsections here: Links The rating system is as follows: O-Morally Offensive A-IV-Adults with Reservations A-III-Adults A-II-Adults and Adolescents A-I General Patronage

It gives more detail than the usccb, but don't take artisitic merit as valuable as the bishops do. Good movies LOTR of course Quiet man Vertigo Rear Window Gone with the wind The Mission Other cool movies Farenheight 451 Planet of the Apes (Charlton Heston) Never been kissed More to come

pegger
I really enjoy movies, and find myself watching all sorts of movies. I think that even an 'evil' movie can bring about good, and help us become closer to God. Remember even the Bible is full of sinful stories about Sex, Murder, War, etc, but by no means should we not read it as a result. Just because we watch a bad movie does not necessarily mean that we condone the sin that the movie portrays. There are three important things I try to do when watching a movie. The first is to ensure that I am aware of the content, and do not let it lead me into sin. This has to be the biggest danger with 'evil' movies is that we do not let them get the best of us. I think as long as we watch them with a prayerful mind then we will be ok. The second is to watch them with a prayerful mind. It is amazing what you might see when we keep Christ with us while we watch movies. Sometimes I like to keep my bible with me, or pray the rosary. I find interesting corilations with scripture verses, and try to find what message God can speak to me through this film. One of my favorite films to examine in this way would be "Empire Records". This is a very off the wall movie, that may make people wonder what it has to do with God. The plot is full of sex, drugs, love, suicide just to name a few. But through all that I saw the story of the Disciples on the road to Emmaus. All of us have many struggles in life, after all it isn't easy. But through all of this Christ is with us, even when we don't recognize it or think of Him. However, when we do realize that He is with us through all our struggles, then it can become a very beautiful thing. Also do not be afraid to discuss movies especially in terms of their morals, and Christian teachings. I implore you to watch a good variety of movies, and listen closely to what God has to say to you through them..... Check out http://www.hollywoodjesus.com/ for some interesting perspectives. I do not agree with the theology of all their reviews but it may get the ball rolling. Happy Viewing
MrsFrozen
I think I am going through a time of confusion about movies right now. Many of the top 10 movies had objectionable scenes in them, yet they were still recommended. This greatly confuses me! I am looking at things right now as movies are for entertainment, and I shouldn't be entertained by sin. Evidently, it's not a sin to watch a movie with objectionable material, even though we don't condone that material. Why isn't it a sin? Can someone help me? I'm really having a problem here! Thanks and God bless!
