Ok, Pham-

I am starting to do my search for a good Roman Catholic colleges near or in my state where I live...Florida.

I just looked into Georgia at Souther Catholic College, and it seems nice. Does anyone know about that school or go there?

Of course, I looked at Ave Maria, but I believe they do not have my major, English. I am also thinking of majoring in Theology or Youth Ministry. Most likely Theology.

The reason why I want to be near Florida is because I have made many friends there, and even though my family is from Minnesota, I just need to get away. I don't know, have my own identity.

Any help or resources would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I am not thinking about going until fall of 2009/Spring of 2010/Fall 2010. Thanks!

How about St. Leo's. I've been to retreats there, and they seemed very orthodox, although I never took classes there. Barry in Miami is supposed to be Catholic as well, but other than a kid from my youngest baseball team getting a scholarship there, I don't know anything about them academically.

I go there.

Priest is amazing.
English faculty- I LOVE them.
Theology- smart as anything and orthodox as they come.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Sorry, haven't really heard of any good Catholic colleges in Florida, but one I am looking at is Benedictine College in Kansas, and it looks awesome. They definitely have English, they have Mass and Confessions throughout the day, and the campus is beatiful.

I am not concerned as much with what college you are looking into as much as I am your choice of major.

Let me ask you, Why do you want to study theology?

Peace!

Well if you find that you want to stay in Minnesota, St. Thomas isn't too bad, but stay away from St. Scholastica unless you want to work on a conversion ground.

God bless-

Mionnesota Option : St. Thomas' Catholic Studies Program. Tough enough but terrific!
If the coast looks better : FUS or Duqusne.

I'm pretty sure Ave actually does have an English major, and I know that it has a Literature major (I know someone who is a Literature major there). It's really small, though, still growing. If you went there it would be an extremely unique experience, totally orthodox, but maybe a little bit sheltering. Like FUS, the students there don't have to do a whole lot of evangelizing on campus. I ended up deciding against Ave, and FUS decided against me (didn't give enough money to me... *sigh*...), but I'd recommend applying to both. Ave gives a lot of financial aid, too. Have you looked at Belmont Abbey? I'm pretty sure it's in Virginia, and it's supposed to be pretty good. Benedictine College in Kansas is a good orthodox school, but is a bit lacking in academics. Major choices there are pretty limited.

Isn't Belmont Abbey in North Carolina?

I'd recommend this book: The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College

One of the people on the committee who put it together was fr. Groeschel.

I have heard from some very good priests and religious that Belmont Abbey is a Liberal Catholic College....and is lacking in some major ways.

Some sound Catholic Colleges are:

Ave Maria (FL)
Franciscan University of Steubenville (OH)
Magdalen (NH, I believe, correct me if I'm wrong)
Loras College (IA)
Thomas Aquinas (CA)
Benedictine College (KS)
Dallas University (TX)
Briar Cliff University (Theology depart. is striving to become better) (IA)
University of Nebraska-Lincoln has a GREAT Newman Center... (NE)
Christendom (either VA or WV, can't remember which one at the moment)

If I remember anymore I'll be sure to post them!!!

God Bless!

Allie

The reason why I ask what your interest is in Theology is because many people with whom I attended Steubenville and were in the Theology department were studying it for the wrong reasons.

1) Many people go to the youth conferences and get fired up for their faith. They then come to Steubenville to study Theology in order to learn their faith better.

2) Still others came to learn Theology with an aim to evangelize. Read here: so they could run out and convert all the Protestants they see.

Such are not legitimate reasons to study Theology.

Theology is a speculative science, with rules and tools all its own. If a person studies Theology with reason 1 in their hearts, then they are going to lose faith. This is because what the person really needs is catechesis, not Theology. They need to be taught the faith first before thinking speculatively upon it, which is what Theology does.

Reason #2, while perhaps more noble, is still an error. An error because the student will not take seriously the proper science to Theology because they are only looking for the quick apologetic answers to the Catholic/Protestant debates.

I once asked one of the Theology professors at Steubenville about the above. He replied that he thought it was a pretty accurate assessment of why people study Theology at Franciscan. Having that validation meant a lot to me.

Peace!
