She gets to throw up every morning. She gets to have labor pains. She gets to feel the baby kicking. You both made the baby with God and you're both parents but she is the only one who is pregnant. My husband is sharing in this pregnancy with me; I'm not in it alone. We say that we are pregnant. Now, while I am the one getting sick every morning, my hubby is there holding my hair back, cleaning up after me, and making sure I don't get dehydrated. He carts me off to the hospital when he knows I've been getting sick for far too long. He's constantly afraid for my safety as well as for the safety of the baby. As for feeling the baby kick, Micah has pretty much felt that right along with me from almost the moment the baby's kicks were able to be felt, and now he can even see the baby kick because the little one kicks so hard. He gets me something to eat when I'm hungry. Keeps getting mad at me because I won't wake him up at 2 am when I'm hungry lol. He rubs my back and legs and helps me to relax. I'm in complete shock that I haven't completely exhausted him yet. I personally could never not want to say "we're pregnant". He is experiencing everything right along with me. In every capacity that he is capable of he is experiencing this with me. Our Bradley teacher always says "yall are pregnant" or "yall are expecting." This pregnancy isn't just about me and the baby. This pregnancy is about my husband, the baby, and myself. Together we are sharing in all the woes and happiness of pregnancy. Our Bradley instructor also said that in a Bradley Method labor the Coaches (Dad) are more exhausted than the moms afterward, and not just because of the hormone release. The Bradley Dad is responsible for so much. His sole purpose is to keep mom calm, relaxed, and as comfortable as possible. The duola who is in the class with us agrees that in the number of births that she has been present for (almost 25 yrs of experience) that the coaches are always exhausted by the end. So (stepping down from my soapbox)... I will continue to say "we're pregnant" or "we're expecting" because my hubby is experiencing everything right along with me. We're both in this pregnancy together and we are both expecting with excitement the arrival of our child.
Thy Geekdom Come
well WE are expecting a baby right? and WE made the baby right? so sex is for UNION and PROCREATION right? so it seems natural to say that WE are pregnant, and that SHE is carrying OUR child
Yes, y'all are pregnant. She is carrying your child in her flesh, but her flesh is your flesh. Where else could this be more true than in regard to sexual union and children? I tend to think that those who don't like saying that the couple is pregnant dislike it precisely because they think it takes away from the unique reality of the mother's pregnancy (as if the husband was trying to jump in and claim credit for bearing the child with his wife, to the detriment of his wife). On the contrary, no one would ever think that the husband is doing all the work in pregnancy; clearly the wife carries the child in the most complete sense, and I don't think that saying, "we're pregnant," could ever take away from that, because no one would ever think that the couple's being pregnant some how means that the husband and wife are sharing the load equally. So I think that women who feel as if their husbands are trying to claim equal credit are being silly.
