CatherineM
Justin-I agree with you that there's no way a legitimate judge lets this get past first glance, but if it did go to the Supreme Court, even this one, it would get quashed. I'd just be worried about the chill in publishing in the mean time. I mean my book could have been viewed as being discriminatory against neo-Nazis. Nihli Obstat- Everyone's writing to the Prime Minister and Governor General about Morgentaler, but neither have any say in the decision. It comes from a board that is headed by a supreme court judge. What most people don't know is that the decisions are supposed to be anonymous, and his wasn't, and we still don't know how his name showed up on the list. Somebody with some juice did something. What especially galled me is that when you see new recipients interviewed, they almost all say how humbled they are to be honored. Not Morgentaler, all he could talk about is how much he deserved the award. How could a holocaust survivor become an abortionist?

To the Governor General because she's the one that ultimately makes the appointment and the PM because there's talk that the committee should be forced into better accountibility. Of course neither on their own can really do much, but my hope (and probably the hope of other people that are writing) is that the backlash is great enough for whoever has the power to rethink it. I was under the impression that the Governor General did have a fair bit of say in the matter though... was I incorrect?
CatherineM
She has about as much say in appointments by the honours board as she does in what she says at the throne speech. It is handed to her to carry out. She has no veto power according to my husband. 100 years ago the GG had more power, but is now just a figurehead. She's a very nice lady though. I got to have tea on the veranda at Rideau Hall with her. She joked about how hard it is to raise a child in what is basically an art gallery. She told a very funny story about a sleep over party that set off all the alarms during a game of hide and seek.

Although I can be mad that she hasn't said a word against this. At least it is legitimate to complain through her directed towards the commission, I have no doubt. It's almost as if, nowadays, instead of growing up, we are growing down. We get offended at the most bizzare things anymore...it's almost laughable. jeffpugh
True true true. Canada smells of elderberries a lot lately. Who's heard about Morgetaler getting the Order of Canada? Almost makes me want to pack up and leave right now. I wrote to the Governor General that gave him the stupid award, and I wrote to the PM asking him to do something. If Catholicism becomes a hate crime in Canada, I'll happily live in prison for the rest of my life. Or maybe seek asylum in the States. Wouldn't that be a good news story? "Canadian Refugees Seeking Asylum in US, Vatican"
Dude... I'd be packin' up and movin' with ya. Either that, I'd dig my heels in and fight the good fight... but Asylum seems like a good temporary plan of action.
Yeah, my husband's a member of the Order of Canada, so you can imagine what his life has been like the last week or so. He's got people wanting him to give interviews, sign petitions, call the Governor General (like he has her personal cell phone number), and even give it back in protest. He hasn't even had it a year yet. He was the first person with schizophrenia to receive it, and it has meant so much to other people with the illness, that he just can't bring himself to return it. He has people come up to him in the hospital or on the bus to tell him what it meant to them that for once a schizophrenic was in the news for something other than hacking their neighbor's head off with a machete. A lot of people were against him receiving it as well, so he's very conflicted. He has signed the petition, and sent a letter, but feels as powerless as everyone else to actually do anything.
Aww... that's sad. I have a friend who's grandfather got the Order of Canada. That's where I heard of this catastrophe... my friend's mother was thinking about having it given back, but I said he received it in a different time... they were protesting it though. Selah
Next case: Gay man sues Bible publishers for discrimination. According to him, he suffered great emotional and mental instability...or something...case dismissed. NEXT CASE! lol. It won't last long if the judge has any sense in his or her head.
