All we need is the first domino to fall.... Can I sue the Dutch government for its abortion and euthanasia laws? They're published. Others have told me about them. cmotherofpirl
We are lucky he is suing in court where it has a chance to be defeated. CatherineM
I suspect, unless the Supreme Court of Canada re-enacts free speech rights being eroded by provincial human rights commissions, that the Western Catholic Reporter is going to be a relic. Canada smells of elderberries a lot lately. Who's heard about Morgetaler getting the Order of Canada? Almost makes me want to pack up and leave right now. I wrote to the Governor General that gave him the stupid award, and I wrote to the PM asking him to do something. If Catholicism becomes a hate crime in Canada, I'll happily live in prison for the rest of my life. Or maybe seek asylum in the States. Wouldn't that be a good news story? CatherineM
Yeah, my husband's a member of the Order of Canada, so you can imagine what his life has been like the last week or so. He's got people wanting him to give interviews, sign petitions, call the Governor General (like he has her personal cell phone number), and even give it back in protest. He hasn't even had it a year yet. He was the first person with schizophrenia to receive it, and it has meant so much to other people with the illness, that he just can't bring himself to return it. He has people come up to him in the hospital or on the bus to tell him what it meant to them that for once a schizophrenic was in the news for something other than hacking their neighbor's head off with a machete. A lot of people were against him receiving it as well, so he's very conflicted. He has signed the petition, and sent a letter, but feels as powerless as everyone else to actually do anything. Finally recognized for dedicating their lives to something they really believe in... then have the award become so meaningless to them that they feel that they have to return it in protest. This decision ruins more than our faith in the GG's decisions, it destroys the faith of a great many people in the recognition in and of itself. However, I think even if it he is the case would be eventually overturned by the Supreme Court if not before. How that Court is now I just don't see that kind of decision coming down from them.
