Yeah.

I always avoided burnout by thinking this:

Hey, that ain't me; I'm doing pretty good!

Seeing a poor schmuck who was ejected from his car, had an open tibfib, broke his neck and landed smack in an ant pile makes my sore back look like a free umbrella drink in Hawaii.

It ain't bad. 3 months later, the guy was back at work; and he was dui, anyway.

I don't think anyone would deny that responding to traumas (traumae?) is terrible in the subjective aspect, because it does tear apart families, end relationships, and destroy lives.

However, I think that one needs to develop a certain distance from such things if one is to function well in those situations. I speak now of the objective aspect. It's THIS part that gets the blood running, and frankly, I think that might be a good thing.

Exactly!

When I see my patients, I have a connection with them that makes me compassionate towards them because I know that are a human and I treat them how I would want myself to be treated if I were in their position. However, I can distance myself from the feelings of, "What if this were my grandma, grandpa, brother, sister et. al." That doesn't take from my empathy and compassion...this is really hard for me to distinguish.

I just know when I read my Flight Nurse book or when I see a helicopter a sense of loyalty, pride and honor swells up in my heart. I cannot wait until I can achieve my dream :)
