I) that I went to was REALLY awesome. The lady twisted her ankle and her bones popped out of her leg.
Yeah, my first category-1 / Trauma Red was with a guy who had been hit by a semi...among his injuries was a compound fracture in his upper right forearm and an internal trauma amputation of his left foot. It was scary, but really cool at the same time. The patient recovered, BTW. I don't know whether they could save his left foot, but other than that he's fine as frog hair. icelandic_iceskater
you guys crack me up. I could never be a rn, I just about pass out at the sight of a sliver. Edited July 9, 2008 by icelandic_iceskater
Winchester
Not an ER, but I've been working a while in the fire department and I've never understood trauma junkies. It's mildly interesting, but I've never sat around and wanted to make a trauma run. If I never made another bloody mess, I'd be a happy human. However, I do like watching ya'lls reaction to trauma, especially the morbid jokes.
alicemary
I have been an RN for over 30 years. I have had my share of emergencies, codes and quite frankly disasters. I have seen sights that would cause most to black out. There are many who like the thrill of the emergency situation. That is why there are ER and ICU nurses, they like the fast pace and an ever changing shift. Most people feel that ER and shows such as this are true, far from it. When one realizes that you are witnessing the death or a life changing event, you have respect for this type of thing, but hardly a thrill. Families are totally ruined, marriages are dissolved when a 22 year old husband was brought in for drunk driving...well what they could scrape off the road. Helicopter fly in the remains of many an accident. Parents see their children dead or dying. Every day I see young people brought back from near death, of course, they have the mentality of a two or three year old, so much brain damage. You are merely responding to the adrenalin rush that is necessary to get through a shift. It jump starts you sometimes, until you just burn out. I understand the 'romance' behind this type of thing, but underneath, it is a very cold cruel world. I no longer do this type of work, I have had my fill. For one there is a lot of down time. Secondly, there are things that happen that should not have happened. They happen because people are being stupid. One of the worst things I saw that will always ALWAYS stick in my head is a woman who was hit by a bus...she died instantly but I went in to help get her ready for the morgue. It was the worst thing that I ever saw. There was nothing romantic behind it. Everyone has their nitch I found. I could never do PEDS, OB/Mother Baby or Oncology. But ER I can handle. I know that someday I will get burned out but that is why I like nursing there are a lot of opportunities out there in the field Meg
She is right...there are people who go into it for the romance and the glory. I don't feel that I am one of those people. I truly honestly love the stuff because I think that the body is amazing! I think pretty well on my toes so I felt so at home in the ER whether it was not busy or when there was something exciting. As far as ER goes...why is she impressive? Is it her stunning beauty or did she do something in the show? Edited July 10, 2008 by picchick

But I also like the fact that on the screen she doesn't come across as starved and that she looks tall. My wife is tall and also normal sized.
