I'm 17, and I think that I, along with most people my age, have the sense not to do something that stupid. I do agree though that this doesn't justify a lack of sympathy
TBS, you're not like most 17-year-olds. That said, people do stupid things at all ages. Like you said, though, this doesn't justify a lack of sympathy.

The same would be true for lack of sympathy.
I agree. What he did may have been really dumb, but it doesn't make his life any less valuable than anyone else's. He was one of the unlucky ones who died as a result of stupidity. A lot of people do many stupid things but get the benefit of learning from them instead of being killed by them. Kitty
I would have had sympathy for the kid if the coaster derailed and he was killed by falling debris or a car. This kid scaled two fences, ignored warning signs and stood directly in the path of an oncoming vehicle going 50 mph. Some witnesses even say he was trying to touch the coaster or the feet of the people riding it. I don't feel bad for him, but I do have sympathy for their family. Kitty
If he was mentally ill that is a different story, but from the news stories I've read he was not. What can I say. I have a hard time sympathizing with people who do stupid things.
homeschoolmom
Science is now indicating that the brain is not fully developed in the areas of judgement and impulsive behavior until about age 25. Yes, it was stupid, but sheesh, it doesn't warrant the death penalty.
Alycin
Being the person who posted this I have to say that I was shocked and horrified the first time I read the story... it wasn't until after I was reading these comments and saw someone say "all that for a hat" that I kind of chuckled. I didn't laugh outright but I thought it was ironic that he lost his head trying to get his hat back. I thought, "well I guess he won't be needing the hat anymore"... but now reading all the posts I feel terrible for making a joke about it, even if only in my head... that was horrible... i apologize. kujo
Since when was the comment aimed at you? I don't recall you saying that you guffawed at this event. I find your response to be judgmental (assuming it was aimed at you and extrapolating from a few basic points I made) and self-righteous. There is a difference between finding gore interesting in movies and in real life. I'm talking about the type of people who visit real life gore websites for fun and get their jollies that way. There is nothing self-righteous about being sickened by the pure evil, or at very least sickness, involved in that.
Well, since you weren't specific as to what you would consider a "guffaw" I felt offended that my opinion on the matter was viewed as "sick." The kid did a stupid thing. Sometimes stupid things involve a scrape, a bruise, a night in the drunk tank. But you should know that racing in front of an oncoming vehicle is dangerous and could cost you your life. He knew this and decided to either ignore it or think he'd be safe. Turns out he was wrong and the consequence was his death. It's unfortunate that his friends didn't stop him from doing something so idiotic. Again, the tragedy is for the children and others who had to witness such a spectacle.
