If I ever wake up male and then become Pope I'd totally be Linus II.

Yes I'm a geek. :)

I like Sixtus VI (probably a bit impractical, but funny)
and Pius XIII.

I'd love:
Sr. Gemma Marie of the Passion of Jesus
Sr. Gabriel Mary of the Passion of Jesus
I like both of those.

And, they are certainly better than the latest name I came with from the saint list I posted--Sister Mary Jane. Obviously, she would not be a Poor Claire.

I've never heard of a Sister taking the name of the Venerable Bede, or alternatively St. Bede the Venerable, but I've always liked that name. There is a large parish of St. Bede the Venerable in LA, and I used to drive by it frequently. Every time I drove by, I smiled.

I know a little girl who's name is Ava Marie.

Sister Ava Marie. Such a beautiful name.

The first DSMME I met in person (the Sister that picked me up at the bus station for a "Come and See", actually  ) was/is named Sr. Ave Maria. I always thought that was really beautiful. :)

Ok, it's not really unusual/special or whatever, but I've always wanted one of these:

Sr. Mary Therese of the Sacred Heart
Sr. Mary Therese of Jesus

But seriously, I think I'd be overjoyed with whatever they give me if I'm accepted into the community....ok, maybe not something like Sr. Polycarp

Thank you! I wanna be a Carmelite...well, my spiritual director tells me I should keep an open mind, so I'm considering all my options, but I love the OCDs and all my Carmelite saints!

Those are lovely names. I sometimes wonder if they have a problem in choosing names in Carmelite Communities, since so many Carmelite nuns/Sisters (understandably) would like to have Therese or Teresa as part of their religious name.

Poor Saint Polycarp, no one wants to be named after him. I just read a very short biography of him, and he was one of the earliest Christian writers whose writings survive, so he is a valuable source for authenticating the orthodox teachings of the very early church. He was a disciple of the apostles, particularly John, (although apparently it is not entirely clear which John this was). Saint Polycarp lived to be quite elderly, but suffered an awful martyrdom, in which he was first burned at the stake, but when the fire at didn't work, he was stabbed. There is dispute about the year of his death, with estimates ranging from 155 to 167.

So, it appears that Saint Polycarp was an important saint, but not one who gets much attention, except perhaps from scholars. (Speaking of scholars, my very brief summary above was taken from only one source, and could well contain errors, and certainly does contain omissions. I was trying to write a very short, one-paragraph description, not a lengthy or learned tome, so the paragraph above should be read with that in mind. (But, please feel free correct any important/serious errors in my summary.)

I forget why "Polycarp" has a reputation of being a name future Sisters/nuns want to avoid. It may simply be because the name sounds funny. But, was there a fictional work about nuns that contained a Sister Polycarp who was disliked? The "Trouble with Angels" comes to mind, but it's been a long time since I saw the movie or read the book.

Vee8 started calling me "Sister Polycarp" a few days ago, and I'm finding that the name is growing on me. And, after I read about St. Polycarp's life, it seems he has gotten a raw deal. He may not be one of the "flashier" saints, but he appears to have made an important contribution to the history of the early church.

So, in our imaginary Phatmass Phemale Community (see note below), I might decide to be Sister Polycarp, just to give St. Polycarp his just due. (Although some would say that having his name attached to someone like me would be an undeserved penance for St. Polycarp). So, I may end up "Sister Mary Rosary Bede" because the Venerable Bede has always been one of my favorite saints--a respected scholar, and the only native of Great Britain to be named a Doctor of the Church. And, "Sister Mary Dewey Decimal," a name we've mentioned several times, would certainly be descriptive. (As the only one among us (at least as far as I know), with a Master's in Library Science, I plan to be the librarian/archivist in our imaginary community.)

Note to those who are new among us: In our lighter, sillier moments, several of us who post in VS have had fun creating our own "Phatmass Phemale Community." However, my reference to our silliness, and our imaginary Community, is in no way intended to make light of the serious thought you have given to names that would be meaningful for you in your future (and real!) religious Community.

In the VS forum, we discuss everything from undershirts, to theological differences between communities, sometimes in the same thread. After awhile, you'll get used to this.

I dont! I think every Carmel has a Therese or Teresa but the rest of the Sisters have other names like Maria etc.

I think Sister Polycarp was in "This House of Brede". She said the name was fine because she was a "strange fish" or words to that effect. She had associations with Phillipa's past life that were troubling, but eventually they became friends after a bout with chickenpox.

Someone please help if I have muddled the story completely!
