Omitting The Sign Of Peace

I think that's why more traditional priests omit it.
You mean if you make peace with your neighbour at the start of mass, you might have a new conflict by Communion? Uh oh. :o
Lol. :D
Well I don't know the theological basis, but if you ignored that, it seems to fit better at a less reverent time of the mass, which naturally seems to me to be the beginning or the end.
Although I'm probably losing the meaning of the whole sign of peace. I'm sure it isn't meant to be less reverent than the rest of the mass... just the way it often appears, right?
LOL, true. Although, the Liturgy of the Eucharist is when we turn to focus more towards the altar and the Sacrifice about to take place.

That's exactly what I was thinking.
If we're focusing on the Eucharist, it seems like there should be a different time for thinking about the people around you.

Our parish priest omits it during weekday Mass but we have it on Sundays. I always thought it was because it took up too much time (our priest is famed for whizzing through Mass).

Apotheon isn't helping with his "sketchy" comments! ;) :D
Ultimately it is simply a matter of the personal preference of the priest, i.e., he is free to do whatever he wants.

Right, except there's also the point of trying to take into account the whole "If you are unrenconciled with your brother, leave your gifts before the altar and go be renconciled. Then return and offer your gifts."

*shrug*

Either way, I don't care for it where it is.

I guess it's ok, in the end. If we were perfect, we wouldn't have needed Jesus anyway. :)

The timing of the sign of peace is completely weird imo. It seems like a lazy after-thought. We have been at Mass for a good half hour, standing next to people, and then when Christ becomes present on the altar we turn away from Him and acknowledge the people around us.
Why not have it at the beginning, so that we are not distracted from Christ's presence in the Eucharist?

Crazy....

Hehe, exactly what I said. :D
I wonder what sort of process it would be if the Church decided that they wanted to change that...

They should. Our last priest (RIP) never included it. He was traditional too. I think, even among priests, there is a marked decrease in respect for the Eucharist. I see many priests nowadays handle and give out the Eucharist as if they were giving out sweets. There is no awe and little respect, compared with the priests of old.

It just makes no sense to have it where it is. I hate it when the priest starts the Agnus Dei, and people are still saying 'hi' to each other and shaking hands.

That would make a lot of sense, because this priest has spoken before about the need to respect the Eucharist. Thanks for the discussion, folks!

Just a P.S. I actually like the sign of peace before communion. It reminds me that my faith is not just some selfish spiritual head-trip. Shaking hands with my brothers and sisters and offering them peace seems to be one of the most Christ-centered and holy things one can do. It reminds me that have I not charity and love of neighbor, I am indeed a tinkling bell. Having said that, I appreciate the comments made that yes, if the sign of peace adopts the "how ya going" sentiment, it can be jarring and out of line. Perhaps after the Kyrie would be better? Me not a liturgist!!

Don't get me wrong either, I like the sign of peace. :)
Just maybe some more thought could be put into exactly where it happens... :) It could be done.

Whenever I was at a school Mass, the priest always omitted it. I guess he didn't want us to start chuckin the deuce, giving each other high fives, coming up with secret handshakes, or doing fist bumps, like the Obamas........
