aalpha1989
Have any of you heard of the Cistercian monastery in Austria called "Stift Heiligenkreuz im Wienerwald"? Is it generally known for orthodoxy? I'm interested in visiting it when I next make it to Europe. If it is a little questionable, what cloistered orders in Europe (preferably German speaking... I don't know any other language other than English) are pretty orthodox? THanks!

Chiquitunga
I'm not in Europe, but I bet EJames from Canada will be able to help you here. Just from reading their site a little though, they look great! And it says they're receiving a lot of young vocations, which is always a good sign. They have this new CD out which I've heard has done very well in Europe. I listened to a few samples, and they sound wonderful! http://stift-heiligenkreuz.org/English.kin...ehrungen.0.html Also, there are Carthusian Monks in Germany and Switzerland, though the Carthusians usually only allow visits from serious discerners and for a month discernment retreat, I think. Johanna
I'm not sure about the answer, as I am not so firm with monks cloisters, but at least the Pope said that in this monastery "glows the Marian spirit of St. Bernhard of Claivaux". Hope this helps a little.

veroni213
Here's a picture I took a couple weeks ago. Once a year in Vienna, they have this thing called "The Long Night of the Churches" which is basically a way cooler version of the "Long Night of the Museums" that other European cities have. Essentially, all the churches stay open really late and have open house. They have Mass, prayer, confession, sacred music, tours, sacristy show and tell, lectures etc. There were probably 65 churches participating that night, about 45 of which were Roman Rite. This picture was taken on that night in the downtown Cistercian church, which is only open for this event. The monk who gave the introduction repeatedly referred to it as a "puppenstube" and tried to convince everyone to make a visit to the "real" Heiligenkreuz in the Wienerwald. The young monks he brought with him sang evening prayer several times for the benefit of the massive crowd because not everyone could get in the church at once. There was also quite a moving talk on how being a Cistercian means being in love. Hopefully, I'll be able to get out to the monastery at some point. EDIT: If you click on the picture it gets bigger. Edited June 25, 2008 by TrueImage

There are "interesting" parts of Austria but this is decent. You can find some Benedictine houses here. In the UK, as mentioned, Pluscarden and Quarr rock, as does Buckfast Abbey (personal interest - I'm an Oblate). They're all Benedictine. A UK Cistercian Abbey of monks you might like to consider is Mount St. Bernard: http://www.mountsaintbernard.org/ Try this site for orders in Germany. The Buronese Congregation is quite big. For Cistcercians specifically (both common and strict observance), try this page. In the Netherlands there's an Abbey of Solesmes Benedictines at Vaals: http://www.benedictusberg.nl/ Just some thoughts off the top of my head. (too bad) Unfortunately, I have very little time for sightseeing so I might not get out to Heiligenkreuz.

jkaands
There are a number of orthodox habited OSB's in the US--assuming that's what you're looking for--: Regina Laudis, Westfield, Petersham, Virginia Dale. Mary Queen of Apostles, Srs. of St. Emma--and a lot of the unhabited OSB's are orthodox as well.
