Oh dear :( You'll find a lot of good stuff on www.adoremus.org

That particular quote was from Tra le Sollecitudini (Pope Pius X)

And don't let anyone say "Oh but that's from 1903 and Vatican II changed all that." If they do, ask them where they found their information. Usually the challenge is met with silence or some mumblings about how such-and-such- a priest says it's okay etc.
Thanks.

Hrm. I'll be interested in their answer when I get back on campus...
Yeah, I noticed that too.
The thing is, the bit about piano IS directly out of line with Church teaching, it's not just vague or slightly twisted. People are going to take this and use it to condone all sorts of 'music'.
Exactly. I asked my philosophy professor/advisor about what I should do

He said
Do not object to the Bishops' words, just object to an argument that says the same thing. Mostly they will not remember their own argument. It is often written by some one who is in the Chancery and not by a Bishop directly. In short, keep it on point and not personal. Let me see it when you are finished.
Ah... a fellow warrior in the sacred music movement is at it... hmm... well... I can't add anymore, except this little thought: the other documents that referred to sacred music were not written in a vacuum of thought: the documents were not new individual things, but reaffirmations and explanations on previous teachings. Interesting though, that even the non-sacred music-ers find ways of twisting those documents their way... or as one mentioned above say, "the document was written 100 years ago. it's irrelevant."

lol. yes. I was trying to systematize things and get arguments together.

I am excited because I am going to record my choir at church (which consists of about 18 people aged 5- 50) singing panis angelicu in three parts. The average age is um... 8-10. Yeah... don't tell ME sacred music is hard. LOL

I've figured out that really it can be summed up that music at mass has to be appropriate to the MASS (which I already knew and have written about lol.) but it seems that one of the major arguments is appropriate to the time/age group/congregation. But THAT is a complete deviation from what sacred music is.
