Healthy Eating/dieting

Alright; so I've made the decision (long-time coming) that I want to eat healthier and hopefully lose some weight while I'm doing it. Problem is... I don't really know, concretely, what 'healthy eating' is. It's a very general and unknowable term to me. I should know, as an athlete, but I must confess I have never led a very healthy eating life-style-- mostly because I was able to "balance" out unhealthy eating with my very active athletic life.

Now that athletics, while still present, are not playing such a prominent role in my life, I realize that I really need to focus on my eating habits.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Drink lots of water- it breaks down 20% of what you have eat if you eat it with a meal. and it gives you good skin.
toe raises- I found that if you do a few of these while you are just standing around they start to add up to great strong legs and good leg muscles.
try to if possible, completely eliminate soda from your diet- that cuts off a lot of extra calories which is what I found after giving it up for Lent.
eat slowly- this prevents you from having excess weight due to air that you swallow while eating fast.
find something active that you enjoy doing-for me it's playing volleyball or basketball, or even riding a bike.
if you don't like running or walking, make it better- listen to music on an mp3 player or iPod. I like to download the Dominican House of Studies lecture podcasts on iTunes U and listen to them while running, walking, or biking. They also have a lot of other podcasts availible. ANd they are all free!!!!!

Well I hope this helps. I don't know if it will, but I it helped me get in shape for volleyball and basketball. Just ask a doctor before doing anything that you aren't sure of. I'm only 14, so I don't exactly have a medical degree. I will pray for you! Good luck!

In Christ,

Maria Faustina

Variety is key. Too much of anything is bad. Don't focus on what you can't eat.

www.mypyramidtracker.gov <--We had to use this all the time in school (I was an exercise science major)

If you don't have specific health requirements, or dietary ones, and are just trying to eat healthier; then eat variety, and as close to natural as possible. I'm not necessarily talking about organic. It's actually more environmentally sensible to eat a regular apple grown 100 miles away, than an organic one flown in from several thousand miles away. Everything you eat, the nutrients begin to break down as soon as it is picked/harvested. Fresh frozen will keep more of its nutrients than something that has sat on a truck for a week before being put out.

If you are a meat eater, keep in mind the amount of hormones that a lot of our meats contain. Also to consider is the amount of grain that it takes for various animals to convert the grain to meat. Except for insects, which I'm assuming are not on your grocery list, although I have a great recipe for Oaxacan spicy crickets, chicken is the most efficient in using the least grain per pound of meat created. Cows are the worst.

Mostly it's better to eat an apple rather than apple juice or an apple turnover. Fresh chicken breast is better than mcnuggets. I don't think that is going to surprise anyone. We all know that stuff. What we miss is proper portion sizes because we have been screwed up by restaurants. As an example, the Joy of Cooking cookbook that first came out in the early 60's hasn't changed a thing about their brownie recipe except the number of portions the recipe will make. You use the same amount of flour and sugar, etc, but that same recipe that made 30 brownies in 1960, only makes 16 in the newest edition. We are expected to eat a brownie that is twice as big as a normal portion. The other things are the amount of sodium our diet contains, and the amount of calories that stuff has. You have to educate yourself on reading labels. Calorie wise, a bagel with regular cream coagulated milk has the same number of calories as 3 regular glazed donuts. If you don't ask, and educate yourself, it's like flying blind.

[size=1]Moderation is the key.

But Weight Watchers is an AMAZING program that teaches you how to eat better!
You seriously learn alot there!
The only downside is that you gotta pay for it. :idontknow:
