Deb
Go read it. It is a good book. I promise, it won't turn you into an atheist or anything.
CatherineM
Who's going to play that pope in the movie, Arnold or Bruce Willis? I could see them doing something like that.
Alycin
Haha, I believe you, and I love reading, I actually love Dan Brown (!!! BLASPHEMY!!!)... The Da Vinci code is actually the book that led me to the Catholic faith, so it is a favorite. People get mad at me over that, but... whatev. MissScripture
To quote my theology prof. on Dan Brown and the Da Vinci Code: "That poor man is going to have to do a long time in Purgatory for that book!"
Deb
Dan Brown may be in purgatory for a long time, I agree. I did read all his books. There are so many other authors out there that are so much better. I just finished Lee Child's latest Jack Reacher novel. It was awesome. I love his books. James Lee Burke, my favorite American author. He is amazing.
that is kinda funny. i know that it could have and probably did damage some people's faith but at the same time, for me personally, it led me straight to the church! So I can't be angry with him. Haha.
CatherineM
I wonder if Dan Brown will be met at the pearly gates by JosemarÃa Escrivá? I'd love to hear that conversation.

If people are really practicing their faith, wouldn't they know that most of the stuff in that book is just junk? I dunno... I thought it was a great page turner, but I acknowledged that it was fiction. I also don't understand everyone getting mad at Brown about the opus dei comments... ODAN and members were around before his book came out. He wasn't the one who first insinuated that they were a cult... he was just going off of peoples' word... of course, he could have trusted the overwhelming majority of people who love opus dei, but that wouldn't have made for great fiction suspense writing... But I really am gonna write him a thank you card. Edited June 17, 2008 by Alycin
CatholicCid
I really liked Angels and Demons, until I got to the end. It was probably in the top 5 most disappointing endings I have ever read. And I think probably pretty close to #1.
I agree whole heartedly... The majority of the book is a decent 'detective' novel, but the ending is just total bull honkey. It has little tie in to the rest of the book and just went out of the way to be insulting... It really was a pointless ending that ruined the whole run of the book. I either gave away my version or throw it out... Never even bothered to read "The Da Vinci Code" because of the horrible ending of "Angels and Demons" Here's a spoiler for anyone who doesn't want to waste their time reading:
The majority of the book focuses around the "Illuminati", who are going around and killing the 4 most likely canidates for the Papacy during a Conclave. 'They' are going to blow up the Vatican and all that such using a 'new technology'. Robert Langdon tries to stop them. They get cooperation from the 'camerlengo', or the former Pope's right hand man who is running everything... So, decent detective novel, ect... Then... It turns out that the former Pope used IFV to father a son to a Nun. When the camerlengo found out, he poisoned the Pope. Turns out the camerlengo is the Pope's son, had arranged all the murders, and used the non-existant "Illuminati" as a cover. He planted the bomb so he could be a hero, but becomes so grief stricken he sets himself on fire and dies... If memory serves, that's about it.

And it helped me to dispel some myths regarding the Catholic Church when I talked about it w/ friends. Though unfortunately there were also those who totally bought into it. Of course, those are the ones who would think those things anyway, in all likelihood.
