rachael
Talkeetna, Alaska. Talkeetna is a tiny town in the middle of Alaska where about 300-ish permanently live. It is a few hours there by train from Anchorage and is a couple hundred miles north of Anchorage. It is in the shadow of Mt. McKinley(well about 150 miles away from it, but you can see it well from there) - the tallest mountian in North America and one of the tallest in the world. In climbing season, the population will increase because it is the main area for the hikers to begin their treks. The town had two main streets with like 12 businesses total. The place was in the middle of nowhere. Here is a map- It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. And here is a famous picture from there: I went there on a misson trip in the summer of 2002. We went up there to fix up a camp that had been deemed unsafe for kids to go to. The camp was a few miles down the road from the town and we visited it all of the time. There were 15 of us, including adults. The sun was out for about 22 hours a day. The "cool" place for us to hang out was at the general store where there were (pay) phones that actually got service and you could do your laundy in the back of the store. The whole time I was there (2 weeks) we only showered 2 times because the showers at the camp didn't work. We met a guy there that hadn't showered in over two years! There was also a very rocky beach on a river down the road from the store that we went to alot. Also, one time while four of us were out to get groceries (and everyone else was at a campsite for dinner) we had a bear sighting....scared the carp out of me! Anyways....we took this hour long flight on a plane that only held 6 people to the base of Mt. McKinley. We were about 7000 feet up and there was a base camp not too far from where we were standing. It was STINKIN' cool! We actually expreienced an earthquake while we were there....it was about 5.0 on the Richter Scale. If that didn't make much sense because I was rambling, I'm sorry. :D
Ash Wednesday
I think the coolest place I've ever been to is London. Paris was beautiful too. For natural beauty, Norway was #1. For Catholic stuff, Italy was the best. Definitely. But I felt overwhelmed by it at the same time, and couldn't get used to the Italians. I've also been to Sweden, Denmark, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland (also really beautiful, I would have liked to have seen more) Ireland, Belgium.
