Because you started with an invitation to church, which is usually a major turn off.

And, some people who have a lot of enthusiastic (i.e. evangelistic) Christian friends can smell anything oriented towards their conversion from a mile away. For people like that, it's probably best to avoid inviting them to anything specifically Christian and simply pray for them while being a good friend. If their defenses are up, attacking even harder won't be nearly as effective as waiting patiently for them to lower the gate and invite you in.
