Carrie
Some things that would happen if marijuana was legalized: 1. It would be taken over by businesses, thus making the "street" marijuana almost non-existent--no more marijuana dope dealers, as they wouldn't be able to compete 2. It would be government regulated and taxed, so the "potency" of a marijuana cigarette would probably reduce because of government safety measures that would probably be imposed (similar to how alcohol content is regulated in alcoholic beverages) 3. We'd have to watch even more of those dumb T.R.U.T.H. commercials. Exactly! You articulated this much better than I did. Thanks!
God Conquers
Ok, the Canadian situation is different, but what our government wants to do is idiotic. They want to DEcriminalize, but not control. So they're basically just not enforcing posession laws anymore. Way to hand over the business to organized crime! I'm all for legalization. It makes sense. People are too dumb to stop doing it when it's illegal, no more people will do it when its legal, some might even stop cause its not cool or dangerous anymore. Tax revenues would be incredible. Quality would be enforced, as would driving impairment laws and testing. Our alcohol is already controlled by the government, as are cigarettes, why not pot? Some of the money can be used for rehab programs for kids who are addicted, who would be anyways, except also in jail. So they're better off. No one's saying its good to do, just that it's smarter from a governance perspective to legalize.

foundsheep
thanks for your input. and Richard, your last point made me think of a bumper sticker slogan: Man made beer. God made weed. Whom do you trust? (well, it said "who" instead of "whom" but still ) i remember the bumber sticker that said "CASH, GRASS, or A**, nobody rides for free." cmotherofpirl
Alcohol kills your liver: talk to the guy acrosss the street from me waiting for a transplant. Weed kills your brain: sit with somebody so dumb that you have to explain to them to tie their shoes, especially disconcerting when they once scored 1500 on their SATs. Drugs just kill: come to the funeral tomorrow of a 45 year old who blew out his heart with crack cocaine. He started as a teenager on weed, then proceeded to alcohol, and recently graduated to the big stuff.
Colleen
i think smoking weed is wrong for a reason already briefly mentioned: it impairs your judgment. Getting drunk is wrong (sinful) because your judgment is impaired. You don't have control over your decisions. It's the same with weed. However, drinking in moderation is not wrong because your judgment isn't impaired (at least if you don't drink too much). but i don't think you can really smoke weed in moderation! I personally have a very big problem with drugs. I have an uncle who died three years ago at the age of 28. He started out with the little stuff, then got into the really bad stuff. he just ended up having a lot of problems and eventually died unexpectedly for reasons no one is certain of. i think if you start out with the seemingly less-harmful stuff (weed) it has great potential to lead to worse stuff. i've seen it happen to people my own age. there was this one kid in my class who was really bright but then started smoking weed and it led to worse things. he had to drop out of school right before graduation because there was no way he wouldn't fail. i'll admit i'm no expert. i've never tried the stuff. but i've seen what has happened to other people and no good has come from it. therefore it should not be legalized. IXpenguin21
dust is right about industry taking over pot. cigaretts impair your health. marijuana impairs your mind; your ability to reason. no other creation has an ability to reason. i feel it's sinful to change something that God made "very good" compared to the other creatures of the world which were just said to be good. our bodies naturaly break down, but our intelect is ment to last. if i'm wrong, please tell me. littleflower+JMJ
i agree penguin and colleen i too know a very, very brillant guy in high school, who is not who he use to be since he started smoking pot. if marijuana is legalized we are only handing over something else for us as a society to abuse our bodies with. :shame:
Carrie
People are going to do it regardless of the law. Some kids may not do it anymore because it's not cool or risky. But those who want to do it will find a means regardless of the law.
God Conquers
I agree, "gateway" arguments are flawed. Of course everyone who has done hard drugs has smoked pot! But there is a far far far greater percentage of people who smoke pot and never go on to worse things. If it was legal, it wouldn't be so sought after, there would be no criminal activity surrounding it, and the only money involved would come back to you from the government and be used to help people who would be helpless under an unregulated system (the one we have now) These arguments do not make smoking weed ok. Its probably a bad idea to do drugs... any kind. From a physical and spiritual perspective. It is simply much more economically and socially feasable for the government to control illegal substances than for the criminal element.
