C Martel
I'd also add Gran Torino to the list I probably posted a while ago, it definitely had a Catholic theme and a great film overall.
I hadn't thought about Gran Torino being a Catholic film, but you are right, in many ways it is. My favorite Catholic fims are Passion of the Christ and The Song of Bernadette. I'm surprised that there are not more popular Catholic films out there, especially considering the success of Passion of the Christ.
MithLuin
Hmmmmmm..... I'll try to put them in order of production. The Song of Bernadette (1943) - 'For those who believe, no explanation is necessary; for those who do not, no explanation is possible.' The Bells of Saint Mary's (1945) - Life in a parish, with a new young pastor, and established sisters, and a possibility of the school closing, etc. The Flowers of Saint Francis (1950) - Black and White, Italian with subtitles. Don't look for a 'plot;' it's more an attempt at simple snapshots; but there are some very authentic Franciscan ideas in here (it's not the hippy version of 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon') I Confess (1953) - Alfred Hitchcock takes the seal of the confessional quite seriously. The Exorcist (1973) - Terrifying movie about demonic possession. The Jesus Movie (1979) - The gospel according to St. Luke, now translated into many, many different languages. The Blues Brothers (1980) - 'We're on a mission from God!' True, the nun part of the story is quite over-the-top ridiculous (as is the whole movie), but the idea that they are doing all these hijinx to help someone else redeems their actions somewhat. Well, maybe a little? Slapstick. The Mission (1986) - Jesuit Missionaries in South America The Passion of the Christ (2004) - A very visceral (and yet also devotional) look at the crucifixion. Bella (2006) - A pro-life movie that is a very day-in-the-life look at two people's experience, and you see how we all have the power to help heal one another. The 13th Day (2009) - The story of Fatima What? I can't count
Fragments
Pshh, of course I knew it happened in real life! I also happen to know that all the differences are superficial. Even the levitating happened, as I understand it (though not the spider walk). I did see Exorcism of Emily Rose... it was ok. I was looking for a bit more of a horror than a court room drama though. Why did the woman you live with hate it so much? I didn't notice any anti-theist themes in it... What is the general consensus about Rosemary's Baby anyway? I know we talked about it a while back somewhere else, but I can't recall. I want to see it though.
Watched The Exorcist last night, going to watch Rosemary's Baby tonight. Have you watched it yet?
MithLuin
I'm going to try to find preview clips of many of the movies listed already in this thread. They won't be in any particular order. I can only put two clips in a post, sorry, so I'm about to spam this thread like crazy...... MithLuin
'The Exorcist' Don't worry, the clip I've selected isn't too horrifying. Needless to say, the movie contains some demonic themes, which are not absent from this clip. MithLuin
'Francesco' (1989) Again, I feel the need to warn about the clip not exactly being a paragon of virtue.
