BTW, it's not necessarily the fact that it's formatting, it's that it is reading/writing constantly for hours and hours. If it's a desktop hard drive, it's not built to the same specs that a server drive is, so you can wear it out potentially.

Indeed. So... I'm goona try and install Ubuntu studio now... I've only got 200Mb left on the 3-and-a-bit partition I allowed for Ubuntu. *sigh* I'm not goona get too comfortable with this. I'll eventually have to get another hard drive... or see if Xubuntu is lightweight enough to allow more stuff.

But I don't wanna go through that trouble. I had 127 updates to do yesterday

Oh my. I just read that and it sounds pretty precarious. Is it for the best to wait anyhow--let em work out all the bugs?

Ok, now that I have gotten pretty familiar with my os, I think that I wanna take a peek at Ubuntu Studio.

Hmmm... running the Ubuntu Studio right now. It may just be my favorite "flavor" yet! It's still much more simple than Kubuntu, but just slightly more flexible than the regular Ubuntu. At least, that's my first impression.
Ya, I did happen upon DistroWatch a few days ago and had bookmarked it. It looked like a great source and I was actually going to ask you about it. Thanks!

I am so going to check out those BSDs. I'll be sure and let you know if I install any for a trial run. Are they easier or more challenging to use than Gentoo? If they are more challenging, then I'll try Gentoo at some point in the future first.
Oops. Just found this post.

Both the BSDs and Gentoo are VERY well documented. Gentoo is probably a little bit easier to setup as its portage system is much more highly automated than is BSD's ports system, but it has been a while since I've used either. Of the BSD's, I recommend FreeBSD, first.

I think I will d/l this tonight. Is it much bigger? It looks like it is a few install discs, as opposed to the one live cd that I used for the three Ubuntu distros that I have tied out.

Looking forward to experiencing FreeBSD

Hey, I have been running ubuntu studio for a week now. I really dig it! I just made sure to get it online and run the updates immediately after intall--before i did anything else. No problems.

It's very simple and clean, like the standard ubuntu. But it's a bit flexible--the only real presets are focused toward the entertainment things, like the video and audio players and editors. These programs you have an opportunity to decline at install, though.

So my personal impression is that this is a great ubuntu distrobution for someone interested in a nicely setup “media center” Linux os.

I like it because I like to watch EWTN, and movies on my laptop. I also sometimes rent certain movies and then edit them so that I can watch them with my kids. You know, those movies that you find yourself saying “this would be a great movie for the family... but why oh why did they put that scene in it?” hehe

I had set a lot of that up already with the previous ubuntu flavor that I had—but it was nice to have a lot of this already set up upon install with ubuntu studio. And it was largely better configured too. :)

I see that there is some intrest in the ubuntu community to create a home-server version. That would be sweet...

I just tried out the server edition of ubuntu and it is way to involved for just running something at home. And then I have been trying to set up a server running on the ubuntu desktop and it involves a heck of a lot of finagaling. It hardly seems worth it.

But if there was a home-server distro, scaled down, pre-configured, with visual interface... you know, something "for humans."

Well I finally got ubuntu running (dual-booting with vista). Still don't use it too much because its taking me a little bit to get used to. But seems nice so far.

If your lag is caused by a lack of memory, here's how to find out:

Open a terminal window, and enter "top" to see a listing of all of the currently running processes. Processes are shown by default in the order of decreasing CPU cycles. To view processes listed in order of memory consumption, hit SHIFT-. To return to CPU cycles, hit SHIFT-,

There is no wireless booster software that I am aware of, apart from compression. This is complicated to setup, and requires a compatible proxy server. There is still a bottle-neck at the proxy's connection to the internet; you can only connect as quickly as the proxy can.

Theoretically, you could setup a proxy with a cheap ($50, old computer) connected directly to your wired LAN, then hook a wireless controller to it. The proxy handles the compression for you. But, this is probably a little too much for your needs.

Consider getting the 802.11n standard wireless card and router. Or at least the g.
