Wow --- I got ubuntu up and running right away! I am using it right now. I spent the past few hours learning my way around it, but it was pretty much up and running right out of the install. The only thing that I haven't got running is the wireless and the video media stuff. I'll look at that tomorrow.

I did run the latest Suse last Friday and I spent most of Saturday fiddling with it. Maybe if I was more Linux savvy I wouldn't give up on it... but I am not so savvy so I am going to walk away from it. After the quick and easy install and the immediate luck with Ubuntu I am going with it.

I chose the Kubuntu flavor.

My biggest Linux peeve--the chore of installing anything--seems to have been addressed. The pre-loaded internet linked install that Ubuntu has is fantastic. (OpenSuse does have something similar--a big plus for sure). I am a happy Linux user, methinks. I have waited almost a decade for it to get this user-friendly for "regular" users like myself.
My friend burned me a disc of the recent Kubuntu distro w/ KDE 4.0. Apparently it's still "Beta" in a sense, but I'm about to dive into linux again (I ran Ubuntu before, which has Gnome desktop instead of KDE... I'm liking the look of KDE though.) The only two-ish things holding me back right now are emulating CDs (not sure how I gotta approach it) and getting Finale to work w/ midi... This might be a struggle I don't want to get into. Now... to dig out another hard drive so I don't have to partition my main... :detective:

Btw, I like the usage of "flavour", L D. Makes sense, seeing all the Ubuntus are of the same project.

Yeah? that smells of elderberries... I might need to ask you some Linux questions, btw... see above.
At work, I've got an Ubuntu workstation that runs vmware...
I run Ubuntu, Vista and XP at the same time. (I've experimentally run more at the same time, though.)
And I have a Mac Pro running OS X next to it.
And I have a windows laptop for running around.

At home OS X is the only OS I need.

I've had issues w/ sleeping and wireless networking on laptops with Ubuntu. It just isn't quite polished enough for production work on a laptop, in my experience. I love it on the desktop, though.
Nice. I can see the running 3 OS's in one, but I'm guessing it takes a bit of ram. I know you can install Linux in Windows, but apparently that eats up resources... but I've seen some screenshots of it and it just looks technogeeky. I like it

I've heard that kubuntu is good...they're virtually the same.

Kubuntu is supposed to be "easier" but its also more involved. Many people accuse it of being overload...tending towards what windows tends to do and give you EVERYTHING regardless of the fact that you don't need it.

Xbuntu is sleeker, smaller and has less to...how you say??...break!

Xface is also ridiculously fast. My computer runs MUCH faster than it did out of the box the first time I turned on windows. Its reportedly the fastest of the Ubuntu flavors.

The terminal is nerve-wraking at first but the ubuntu forums (for all flavors) are like instant virtual tech help.

The games (kiddie/simple) are pretty decent.
If anyone has the ability to load "Angry Drunken Dwarves" please do tell me the other unlocks...I haven't figured them out yet. Its a fabulous falling block game.

When I was ordering my new laptop, and insisted that I wanted XP, they thought I was nuts. I just explained that I was comfortable with XP, and knew how to work it, so why would I want to change.

I didn't know that Wal-Mart was selling pcs loaded with Ubuntu.

I just saw this article about Wal-Mart having trouble selling 'em. Even though the "gPC" that they are carrying are cheaper and they have an os that you don't have to register, and pay up the back-pocket to upgrade.

So they have marked the remaining stock down to $199 a pop. Monitor not included.Anyone need a pre-loaded and configured Linux box for a few hundred?

Surprised they were surprised. A lot of people are sticking with XP. Dell sells systems pre-loaded with XP or Ubuntu.

Xp is just kinder than Vista. Vista is going the way of ME. Microsoft is planning to relese Windows 7 (I believe its called) in 2010. Vista is hardly worth the effort.

that was just amazing! I just upgraded to 8.04 and its AMAZING! I want to finangle some things around but my wireless is working without me needing to crunch it in terminal and the DVD player is up and running without a problem.

The great thing about Linux is when you get something working you feel like a genious. When you fix something in windows you just feel like the azzhole who dosn't know how to work a computer.

I concur. Maybe cause you have to work a little for the goodness, while Windows, you have to work to sustain the (semi)goodness.
The three biggest issues that I have had with Linux have been the following:

#1 - Installing software. With Windows it's simply a matter of clicking an executable file that asks a few simple questions and then it does the legwork for you. With Linux, you haver to know how to manually do it. Not only that, there are different file formats and therefor, different procedures to installing stuff.

#2 - Wireless. It isn't wireless friendly. Many of the wireless drivers are not working on Linux just yet. From what I read, they are a complicated pain in the butt to port over. And seeing as my pc is a laptop, having the wireless thing working would be great.

In a nutshell, for the root problem with Linux is that, with a wife & kids, a house to take care of, working (or right now, being a full time student), and massive ADD, I just do not have the time, the patience, nor the attention span to tinker with too much... as much as I like doing that with computers. The program install issue is by far the biggest one for me.
The other day I decided to try Linux again. The recent attractive thing is fitting Linux distributions on cdrom. This way you can try the operating system by running it right off the cdrom without actually installing it on your pc. The closest thing to this a decade ago was setting up a dual-booting system, which for an ADD-ridden layman like myself was often easier said than done.

These Linux "live cds" are the perfect thing for tasting the various distributions. Then, if they are to one's liking it is then a simple matter of installing the dual-booting system. Then, if it is still to one's liking and one wants to make the full jump to Linux, one can go for it.

For those interested, I have been trying out two of the latest Linux distributions: Suse and Ubuntu. I will write my thoughts and impressions here. I began to use Suse over the weekend. I will install Ubuntu tonight.

Anyone else a Linux user?
Welcome to Linux. I use Linux (almost) exclusively, and have been using some kind of Unix now for 8 years. A friend of mine got me into early it in highschool; this genius, at age 14, was working on a project for the NSA involving Linux (SELinux, if you're familiar). Tax dollars at work, right there.

Anyway, let me see if I can help you with some of your problems.

#1 -- Installing software.

Ubuntu comes with a number of really great graphical interfaces for installing software. Chek out synaptic, as well as adept. They beat "sudo apt-get install <program_name>" any day, especially if you're new.

Also, Kubuntu, at least (the KDE flavor of Ubuntu) comes with a program called gdebi to install programs that you download that aren't included in Ubuntu itself. Simply double-click like you would a windows .exe. Ubuntu uses .deb's, though.

#2 -- Wireless

Check out networkmanager. Kubuntu offers a KDE version: knetworkmanager. This simplifies the process of setting up wireless to the point that it is almost easier than windows.

For drivers, you may want to have a look into ndiswrapper. What it does is takes a windows wireless driver, and wraps it up in a ball of software that Linux can use. Think of it like a Windows-Linux adapter for your wireless driver. Then again, many more cards are supported by native Linux drivers now, though.

Other Advice

Use an IRC chat program (like xchat) to connect to the server irc.freenode.net. Then do "/join #ubuntu" or "/join #suse" from within xchat. Both of these channels with connect you with other users for your distro of Linux who will be able to give you very specific help.

Try lots of different Linux distributions. Don't just limit yourself to SuSE or Ubuntu. If you're really up for an adventure, and want to REALLY learn the inner workings of Linux, try Gentoo (but do so on an old computer that is sitting in a closet somewhere). Take a look at the options presented at LinuxISO.org. Fool around. Have fun. Break your computer a couple of times. Learn to fix it. But most of all, have fun, and don't be afraid to ask for help whenever your need it. :)

It seems to me that you are indeed the PERFECT candidate for a Linux Live CD.It sounds like it will fit your needs perfectly.

Ok. What you need to setup is a program called compiz. It also goes by the names beryl and compiz-fusion.

Let me see what I can dig up for you in terms of a HOWTO ...
