LouisvilleFan
I'm surprised 36% of phatmassers are hearing such good homilies so frequently. Where do you guys go to church? I voted "never." Maybe it's truthfully more like 2-5%, but the range of 1-49% was way too wide open to go with that. Of course, a homily doesn't have to "hit like a ton of bricks" to be challenging or very good, but those are still too infrequent. That's why I go to Mass for the Eucharist and a Baptist church for preaching. Edited May 27, 2008 by LouisvilleFan
Deb
I am usually in tears by the end of the homily because I always see myself in them. My pastor has a gift, that is all I can say. Plus he is super spiritual and holy so that comes through too. The homilies are always something that everyone can identify with. Some people at my church, do take notes at the homily. They rarely ever approach ten minutes though, although, I probably wouldn't even knoow if they did. The most important thing of Mass though is a valid Eucharist. A great homily is a bonus. But............Pray for your Priests! Love your Priests!!!!!

I was spoiled! Down here I'm getting great homilies regularly at Sacred Heart and the Newman Center. The Archbishop also gives spectacular homilies. I wish they had podcasts... Archaeology cat
And, btw, my bishop did not just discourage me from preaching long, he said if he hears I went over 10 minutes he'd kill me, and he's Italian he could prolly do it
When I was in JAX, my priest always gave long homilies (around 20-30 minutes, I'd say), but they were always really good. Before coming to FL he was in the Caribbean, and he said his first homily there was relatively short and they complained that it was too short! He told me they didn't think the Mass was good unless the homily was about 30 minutes and entire Mass ran about 1.5 hours (which is what he also did in FL; our nuptial Mass was closer to 2 hours). I personally didn't mind it, especially since he often chanted the Mass. My priest here gives short homilies, but they are also very good. He says he likes us to have more questions when we leave than we did when we got there, as he often ends his homilies with something for us to think about. fides quarens intellectum
To be honest, I don't see why priests have to be the only ones to give the homily. I know that is Church norm, but I don't see why this is necessary. Eh. The pope probably can be trusted about this one.
They're not the only ones. Deacons can.
I heard a quip once that basically went like this: Just because you can not remember what you ate for dinner a year ago, does not mean it didn't nourish you. Same thing applies about homilies. You don't need to always remember everything in order to be nourished.
i like that! Thanks!
CatherineM
We don't have any Deacons in Edmonton, yet. We will soon. We've been praying for our priest because he's sick. He's got DVT so bad that he's having to go to the hospital every day for coumadin treatments.
TeresaBenedicta
Our chaplain at school gives pretty good homilies. I remember one he gave really hit a lot of the students: it was on drinking and self-esteem. I ran into him the next day and he asked how the campus responded and I told him that I had already heard four or five comments about the homily-- in a good way. He said that he hoped he hadn't been too hard on them, but that he really wanted to get the point across.

Deb
The Holy Spirit really does flow out of the Gospel reading and the Homily. It is truly amazing!
