Eh, take a bunch of young people on a huge trip... you can bet your bottom dollar they're going to want to sneak around after curfew-- perhaps something as harmless as into their friends' room next door, or to 24-hour mini-mart down the street. Trust me, I've seen it done. The tape on the door doesn't "restrict" them from doing these things, but it lets the chaperone know whether or not they have been sneaking out. That's usually enough to keep them from doing it: they know they'll get caught.

Word. I have a YM friend who caught 2 teens (both male) "hooking up" on a retreat.

So what if they do? If it doesn't kill them, let them go.

Boy, am I ever glad I grew up in an age where you could actually leave your house without a guard.

Deb, have you ever worked with kids? Maybe you have, but your statements lead me to believe you haven't.

Parents send their kids on trips with the expectation that they will be safe. What would you think if your kid went on a retreat or something, snuck out of his/her bedroom to hook up with their boy/girlfriend? Not good. There's liability out the wazoo for these chaperones and trip planners.

But how do you know in advance that sneaking out won't get them killed? If you ever become a chaperone you will change your tune, because the liability for carelessness or not taking adequate percaution is staggering.

but it could kill them. We had some people try to sneak out of a hotel in downtown New Orleans. Not safe for any teenager at night. Not to mention the dangers of New Orleans but the underaged drinking down there is horrible, which could get the kids in even more danger or trouble. The school would be held responsible if something had happened to them.

I look at it this way. The school/chaperone is acting as your guardian while your parents are not there. My dad enforced a curfew on me for my safety. He knew I was very well behaved and didn't get into any trouble, but enforced a curfew to keep me from being out too late when cities tend to get a little bit crazy.

Many of the school teachers etc. that chaperone are parents and would feel absolutely horrible if something happened to any child who was under their care while away from their parents. Out of love and concern they give them a curfew as well as take procautions to make sure that curfew is taken seriously.

My kids will have a curfew. Not because I'm a meanie head, but because I love them and want them to be safe.

After many riles with youth ministry I'm suprized how frequent hotel staying still is. As a chaperone I'd want a large classroom with a bathroom and only one exit and a couple chaperone's placed strategically near the doorway. None of this hotel room cra[i][/i]p. Sissies.

Word. At WYD '02, we slept in a musty old classroom before the event and the mud at the event. At my first Steubie ('02), we slept on the floor of a gym.

The mud of WYD '02!!!! Quite an experiance. Were you far back enough to smell the porta potties...UGGG HORRIBLE!

And as far as steubenville...as many times as I've been there I've always used the gym. Its just better...plus there are other chaperones who stay up all night patrolling. You'd have to be on crack to try something.

But the mud to a certain extent was fun. Did anyone see the massive toads in Downsville? There was a group of Chillians right next to us and one of them tried to hit one with a wiffleball bat on the ground. Their priest took it away and started hitting him with it asking how did it feel. My friends and I rushed in to help them get rid of them. We took them to the mud to be safe.
