The f-words were for entirely comedic purposes. The affair was used to tick the king off. Like you said, it was a stain on an otherwise fairly pure movie.
To each their own. Cheers!!!
Come on....it has everything you could want in a movie:

Action, romance, comedy, suspense, mystery, morals, Catholicism....MEL GIBSON!!!!
But also nudity, violence, extra-marital sex, foul language, extreme vengeance, etc.

Makes it far from perfect.

There are about 4 instances of profanity. You can find more than that in the average PG-13 movie. As for the violence and vengeance, it was a true story about what one man did. To water it down would've been to change history which would be wrong.

What makes you think Gibson was portraying the "good Catholic man?" I mean, other than the 2 times he crosses himself (once before battle, once as he's convincing Robert the Bruce to join the fight), I can't think of anything overtly-Catholic about the character.

I want to watch this movie again sometime...but, man! Robert the Bruce's father is TERRIBLE! No wonder Robert says, "My hate will die with you." What kind of father encourages treachery? No wonder Wallace was pissed off!

Morals? Sorry, i really used to love the movie. But why did they have to twist history, make the princess older, and throw in an affair? :(
As Peter Jackson did with LOTR, so Gibson did with this movie....

If you go to Wikipedia, you will find that they "threw in" much more than just a smelly affair....they changed the history quite a bit!

....but, sadly, I'm quite used to people deviating from the source material when it comes to stuff like this. :(

It is a great movie! Inspiring.

Agreed! And also, I gotta admit, it's hilarious to see them all moon the English on the battlefield before the Battle of Stirling. I mean, just imagine the wounded husband getting home with an arrow wound in his butt.

Wife: "You got an injury WHERE?!?" :rotfl2:

I know, I know....

....I post a lot in this topic. But I REALLY love this movie. In fact, I just bought the 2-Disc Collector's Edition a few days ago from Wal-Mart. Thank God it was so cheap! :)

I watched the "Tales of William Wallace" featurette last night, which was nice to see!

Historically accurate it is not, but it is a great movie. I certainly enjoy watching it from time to time!

As for the politics of Robert the Bruce's father....

The movie has to end with William Wallace dead, and Robert the Bruce taking over as king of Scotland. That...would be a pretty downer ending if it were clear that Robert the Bruce had betrayed William to his death. So, they've invented the mixed politics of the family. It's his father who orchestrates the betrayal, and he was merely duped into it. See, he's innocent! So, it's okay for Wallace's followers to back him now.

Even if that axe in the final scene is wobbly rubber rather than metal ;).
