o_O Um, what? No, all I'm saying is I think it's a good idea to not be so picky over church architecture and just be glad that our government even allows building of churches.
If you think I was saying modern church architecture and handing out condoms to teens have the same gravity you're mistaken. All I was saying was that Catholic churches should reflect Catholic attitudes. That's all.

As for being grateful for the government for allowing the building of churches of course I am grateful for that freedom. Hell, I'm in military defending that freedom. That's a poor excuse, however, to settle for sub par church construction.
If you're so obsessed with making every church a traditional church, go out and build one yourself.
If you are saying I expect every church to have 150 foot ceilings you are again mistaken. Obviously not every church is wealthy enough for that. However I do think that the Tabernacle should be the focus of every church, the altar should elevated above the people and they should be facing it, etc. As for building one, um, it doesn't really work that way. I can't build myself a Catholic church. A diocese first has to decide a new church is necessary, higher the architects...I don't think I have to go on with the whole process.
He probably WILL in the future, we are argueing here both wether the design is important and what we should be doing in the future. I advocate taking the horrible, (artistically speaking), Chruches and renovating them. And making future Churches more appropriate.
If someone came around asking for money to do this I would give what I could.

Although this is one of my favorite churches of all time, turned into a mosque by the Ottoman Turks, and now more or less a tourist attraction.

Take all the Muslim crud out of Hagia Sophia, and it looks like heaven on earth.

Autumn Dusk
Exactly. I mean, do they really even try to get heat all the way up to the top of the cathedral? Average height is only six feet you know. There's really no need to make sure its warm and cozy at the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
do you know anything about heat?

I've always wondered what the altar and iconostasis must have been like. I wonder what the Muslims did with them? I also wonder what all of the destroyed or covered over iconography must have been like... I imagine that back in the day it was the crown jewel of civilization.

No doubt they desecrated them, as they did the rest of the church building.
Hey buddy we're not snooty. Money's no excuse. The churches in question off times lack catholic symbolism, and if there is any its greatly watered down. Thats the real problem "ugliness" could be forgotten if not for almost the complete lack of actual Crucifixes, icons, statues, and other catholic works of art.
I totally agree with this.

When I went to Rome, as I walked around all the ultra-ornate churches, I gained a new appreciation for the simplicity that some "modern" churches provide. I went there expecting to come back being even more annoyed at how simple and empty our churches are here, but came back, instead, really appreciating them.

HOWEVER,

I can't stand the lack of crucifixes, etc. like was stated above. Modern architecture is fine in my books, but trying to be so simple that we erase our roots is downright wrong.

Very much. I'm w/ L_D here... I wonder how the Altar would look and the Iconastasis? The building looks like the remains of what was once pure bliss.
