Laudate_Dominum
we need to give that St. Patrick thread some comp. fun facts (not sure how true they all are): 1. The first man of Columbus' crew to step on American soil was an Irishman named Patrick McGuire. 2. According to Cromwell's propaganda the Irish have tails! 3. The first actual law of religious tolerance in European history was by the revolutionary Irish Parliament. 4. The earliest record we have of a true condemnation of the practice of slavery was from St. Patrick. 5. According to the ancient historians Eusebius and Nicephorus, some of the Apostles visited Ireland -- among them James, Simon the Zealot and St. Paul! 6. America was called "Great Ireland" by ancient geographers long before Columbus. Edited March 13, 2004 by Laudate_Dominum
Laudate_Dominum
Ever heard of Our Lady of Knock? It was an Apparition of Mary in the late 1800's in Ireland. from the shrine's website: The Story of Knock began on the 21st August 1879 when Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish Church. The apparition was witnessed by fifteen people, young and old. From this miraculous occurrence Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognised Marian Shrine. The personal pilgrimage of Pope John Paul II in 1979, commemorating the centenary of the apparition, inspired an even greater devotion to the Shrine and endorsed the indelible seal of Vatican approval. Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited the Shrine in June of 1993. One and a half million pilgrims visit the Shrine annually.
Thanks Colleen! Our Lady of Knock is awesome. Many people have never heard of it so I'm glad you posted that.
Laudate_Dominum
I was just listening to this jam and felt like posting it since no one has posted a song recently. Vanished Like The Snow Tell me, where did Helen go? This is where she had her dwelling She has vanished like the snow Where there is no way of telling This is where she had her dwelling And the while they come and they go Where there is no way of telling She has vanished like the snow What became of Heloise? Abelard, he was her lover Once they lived in Saint-Denis Where they've gone, I can't discover Abelard, he was her lover All the while they come and they go Where they've gone I can't discover They have vanished like the snow Joan came riding from the rain Everybody knows the story England burned her in the rain Theirs the shame and hers the glory Everybody knows the story All the while they come and they go England's shame and France's glory When she vanished like the snow Where's the times and where's the places? That is what I'd like to know For they gloried in their graces When they vanished like the snow
Laudate_Dominum
This is a little poem by some guy. BAR SESSION and now he is fiddling so fiercely the bow barely moves becomes a skid on the strings raised lowered to the flicker of fingers of feeling as the strict reel the improvised slides grace notes delays double stops all revv. into wilder life one imaged even in a grin he throws to his box player pumping away in tandem and smiling back in that Gaelic code of ease under pressure his thumb in place like a tradition his digits tapping buttons like mad this touch and release the straight arms in our dance with space that line certain as a letter in The Book of Kells itself can still allow like it for the whimsical though a bowrán player would know he should go almost unnoticed of it’s all so Irish no other musician can get it it strikes neither chords nor attitudes half a glance and they bridge sweetly as one into Over the Moor to Maggie put down your drink and listen next time it will be different

Colleen
Okay, let's start up the Irish bar songs! Phil The Fluter's Ball (Percy French/David Heneker) Have you heard of Phil the fluter From the town of Ballymuck The times was going hard for him In fact the man was broke So he sent an invitation To his neighbours one and all As how he'd like their company That evening at a ball And when writing out He was careful to suggest to them That if they found a hat of his Convenient to the door The more they put in Whenever he requested them The better would the music be For battering the floor With a toot on the flute And a twiddle on the fiddle-oh Hopping in the middle Like a herrin' on the griddle-oh Up, down, hands around And crossing to the wall Sure hadn't we the gaiety At Phil the Fluter's ball There was Mister Denis Doherty Who kept a running dog There was little crooked Paddy From the Tiraloughett bog There was boys from every barony And girls from every art And the beautiful Miss Bradys' In their private ass and cart Along with them Came bouncing Mrs Cafferty Little Mickey Mulligan Was also to the fore Rose, Suzanne and Margaret O'Rafferty The flower of Ard Na Gullion And the pride of Petravore With a toot on the flute And a twiddle on the fiddle-oh Hopping in the middle Like a herrin' on the griddle-oh Up, down, hands around And crossing to the wall Sure hadn't we the gaiety At Phil the Fluter's ball First little Mickey Mulligan Got up to show them how And then the widow Cafferty Steps out and takes her bow I'll dance you off your legs, says she As sure as you were born If you'll only make the piper play "The Hare was in the Corn" So Phil plays up To the best of his ability The ladies and the gentlemen Begin to do their share Faith, then Mick It's you that has agility Begob an' Mrs Cafferty You're leppin' like a hare With a toot on the flute And a twiddle on the fiddle-oh Hopping in the middle Like a herrin' on the griddle-oh Up, down, hands around And crossing to the wall Sure hadn't we the gaiety At Phil the Fluter's ball Then Phil the fluter tipped a wink To little crooked Pat I think it's nearly time, says he For passing round the hat So Paddy passed the caipín round And looking very cute Said, you have to pay the piper When he tootles on the flute Then all joined in With the greatest joviality Coverin' the buckle And the shuffle and the cut Jigs were danced Of the very finest quality But the widow bate the company At handlin' the foot With a toot on the flute And a twiddle on the fiddle-oh Hopping in the middle Like a herrin' on the griddle-oh Up, down, hands around And crossing to the wall Sure hadn't we the gaiety At Phil the Fluter's ball
