Lil Red
Some of my favorite Irish blessings: May the most you wish for be the least you get. May the best times you've ever had be the worst you will ever see. --------------------------- May you always have work for your hands to do, May your pockets hold always a coin or two, May the sun shine bright on your windowpane, May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain, May the hand of a friend always be near you, And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you. ------------------------------- May St. Patrick guard you wherever you go and Guide you in whatever you do - And may his loving protection be a blessing to you always. ------------------------------ May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies, quick to make friends. But rich or poor, quick or slow, May you know nothing but happiness From this day forward. --Irish wedding blessing ----------------------------------- I have know many, liked not a few, loved only one, I drink to you. --Irish toast --------------------------------- May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live. --Irish toast -------------------------------- May the grass grow long on the road to Hell for want of use. --Irish toast ------------------------------- May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead! --Irish toast ------------------------------- St. Patrick was a gentleman Who through strategy and stealth Drove all the snakes from Ireland. Here's a toasting to his health - But not too many toastings Lest you lose yourself and then Forget the good St. Patrick And see all those snakes again. --Irish toast ------------------------------ May God grant you many years to live, For sure He must be knowing The Earth has angels all too few And Heaven is overflowing. --Irish toast ---------------------------- May those that love us, love us. And those that don't love us, May God turn their hearts. And if He doesn't turn their hearts, May He turn their ankles So we will know them by their limping. --Irish toast AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE IRISH QUOTES: Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun. --Yeats

Colleen
has anyone else noticed that every negative irish-american stereotype is true? i have, and i know alotta irish people oh, c'mon, it's not ALWAYS true. Just ... rather often. This is the coolest thread ever! Thanks, Laudate_Dominum! I am about half-Irish. You could say i'm like the Irish flag cuz I've got the Northern, Protestant Scotch-Irish Orangemen blood in me from my dad's side (though that side is almost all Catholic now) and the Southern, Green, Catholic Irish in me from my Mom's side. I love all things irish! ooh, and this is my coat of arms (the Northern Irish one): my coat of arms
Colleen
oh yeah, and my name Colleen is based on a Gaelic word meaning "little girl." and my family's coat of arms motto is "nothing is truer than truth." haha One of my favorite songs (specially when the Irish tenors sing it): BOOLAVOGUE Patrick Joseph McCall Fr John Murphy of Bollavogue led his parishioners in routing the Camolin Cavalry on May 26, 1798. The Wexford insurgents were eventually defeated at Vinegar Hill on June 21. At Boolavogue as the sun was setting, O'er the bright may meadows of Shelmalier, A Rebel hand set the heather blazing, And brought the neighbours from far and near, Then Father Murphy from old Kilcormack Spurred up the rock with a warning cry. "Arm, Arm!" He cried, "For I've come to lead you, For Ireland's Freedom We'll fight or die!" He led us on 'gainst the coming soldiers, And the cowardly yeomen we put to flight, 'Twas at the Harrow the Boys of Wexford Showed Bookey's Regiment how men could fight, Look out for hirelings, King George of England, Search every Kingdom where breathes a Slave, For Father Murphy of County Wexford, Sweeps o'er the Land like a mighty wave. We took Camolin and Enniscorthy, And Wexford storming drove out our foes, 'Twas at Slieve Coilte our pikes were reeking With the crimson blood of the beaten yeos At Tubberneering and Ballyellis, Full many a hessian lay in his gore, Ah! Father Murphy had aid come over, The Green Flag floated from shore to shore! At Vinegar Hill, O'er the Pleasant Slaney, Our heroes vainly stood back to back, And the yeos at Tullow took Father Murphy, And Burnt his body upon a rack. God grant you glory, Brave Father Murphy, And open heaven to all your men, The cause that called you may call tomorrow, In another fight for the Green again. Colleen
I love this song: Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go? Oh, the summer-time has come And the trees are sweetly bloomin', And the wild mountain thyme Grows around the purple heather; Will ye go, lassie, go? Refrain: And we'll all go together, To pull wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather; Will ye go, lassie, go? I will build my love a tower By yon pure, crystal fountain, And it's there I will bring All the flowers of the mountain; Will ye go, lassie, go? Refrain: I will range through the wilds And the deep land so dreary And return with the spoils To the bower o' my dearie; Will ye go, lassie, go? Refrain: If my true love will not come I will surely find another To pull wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather; Will ye go, lassie, go? Refrain: Oh, the autumn-time is comin' And the leaves will soon be fallin', And the blossoms o' the summer Will soon wither on the mountain; Will ye go, lassie, go?
