i haven't read that book, L_D, but going back to a conversation you and I and Theologian in Training had a few weeks ago....

I got the Ignatius Press Catalog today and lo and behold! There was a new book by Joseph Pearce on Oscar Wilde! It's so cool! I think I'm going to have to get it.

Anyway, back to Irishness:

Yay! If you get the book let us know how it is. :)

Also, that's a great pic. Keep 'em coming if you feel like it.
What's the story on it? I've been thinking about reading it for a while but I'm not sure what its all about.
Its about how the Irish saved civilization. :) While the barbarians overtook Europe, the Irish monks quitely copied all the ancient Greek books and kept scholarship alive in the monestaries and schools. Eventually the monks went off all over Europe and ignited education and learning: from Paris, Cologne, Milan, Vienna, Naples, Berne, all nothern England. It turn the English helped the Irish christianize Saxony, Bavaria and parts of Denmark. Charlesmagne, was tutored by Irish monks, one taught him astronomy, another geography, and still another statescraft.

I just wish the book were longer. :(

Sliabh Geal gCua Na Féile

O, a shliabh geal gCua na féile
Is fada uait i gcéin mé
Im' shuí cois cuain im'aonar
Go tréighlag faoi bhrón
An tuile bhuí ar thaobh díom
Idir mé 'gus tír mo chléibhe
Mar a shliabh geal gCua na féile
Nach géar é mo sceol

Dá mbidhinnse imeasce mo gaolta
I Sceithín ghlas na séimbhfear
Nuair a scaipeann teas na gréine ann
Ón spéir ghil gan small
Nó dá mbidhinn ansiud faoin réaltain
Nuair a thiteann drúcht ar fhéar ann
O, a shliabh geal gCua, nar dhéirc sin
Dá mb'fhéidir i d'fháil

Mo léan, ná fuaireas tógaint
Le léann is mórchuid eolais
I ngeadhealuinn uasal cheolmhar
Ba sheolta mo bhéal
Da threabhainn cuairt thar sáile
Is do bhearfainn bua thar barr chughat
Mar a shliabh geal gCua, ba bhréa liom
Thú ardach i réim

Mo ghrása thall na Déise
Idir bhanta, gleannta is shléibhte
O snamhas anall thar tréanmhuir
Táim treighlag gan bhrí
Ach ó ba thoil le Dia mé a ghlaoich as
Mo shlánsa siar go hEirinn
Agus slán le sliabh na féile
Le saor gheann óm' chroí

Translation

Bright, bountiful mount
So far, far away
I sit by the sea
Weak, lonely and sad
The foam-tipped waves
Divide me from my love
Oh bright bountiful mount Cua
How wretched my tale

If I were there with my people
On the green-clad hills
Warmed by the heat of the sun
In a bright, cloudless sky
Or if I were there on a starry night
As dew falls on the grass
Oh radiant mount Cua
That would be wealth beyond compare

My sorrow, that I was not raised
With learning and skill
The noble strains of Gaelic
As jewels on my lips
I would travel far
And come back with prizes to you
My splendid mount Cua
I would sing praise to your name

The Déise is my love
Its plains, valleys and hills
Since I crossed the great ocean
I am lifeless and low
But God willed that I should leave
So I send my blessings home
And bid farewell to the bountiful mountain
With all my soul

Here is one for drinking:

Oh Bridgit O’Malley, you left my heart shaken
With a hopeless desolation, I’d have you to know
It’s the wonders of admiration your quiet face has taken
And your beauty will haunt me wherever I go.
The white moon above the pale sands, the pale stars above the thorn tree
Are cold beside my darling, but no purer than she
I gaze upon the cold moon till the stars drown in the warm sea
And the bright eyes of my darling are never on me.

My Sunday it is weary, my Sunday it is grey now
My heart is a cold thing, my heart is a stone
All joy is dead within me, my life has gone away now
For another has taken my love for his own.

The day it is approaching when we were to be married
And it’s rather I would die than live only to grieve
Oh meet me, my Darling, e’er the sun sets o’er the barley
And I’ll meet you there on the road to Drumslieve.

Oh Bridgit O’Malley, you’ve left my heart shaken
With a hopeless desolation, I’d have you to know
It’s the wonders of admiration your quiet face has taken
And your beauty will haunt me wherever I go.
