Dave
The issue of Mary isn't really that big. And those in heaven hearing our prayers too. Why is it not big, in your opinion? It's either true or it's not. If God teaches us that something is true or false, then either way, it can't be a small issue! I think as far as earning salvation goes, he may be a little misled. But is right that we don't earn the love and salvation of God that Jesus died for us for. And he is right that we don't earn the forgiveness of God as Catholics believe. We earn the salvation in that we live the will of God. But just because the Catholic Church is right about salvation in the faith/works sense, that doesn't mean it is in the forgiveness sense. The forgiven former seminarian had it right. A little misled? No, this goes beyond a little! And you're wrong that the Catholic Church is wrong about salvation in the forgiveness sense. The former seminarian didn't know how to be forgiven, but the Church tells us how! It didn't seem like he was listening, though. He went outside the Church for answers and was misled. And the issues of the early church fathers using "real presence" the way he says they did. I like that he's expanding on that. I emailed him and told him he should do more study on church authority and the lineage and actions of the Bishop of Rome. But if you want to argue, these two points would be your best bet cuz everything else seems pale in comparison. His use of the Early Church Fathers is an example of twisting their words and the context in which they said what they said to make it look like they agree with non-Catholics. Cuz otherwise to me everything makes it seem as if Catholics are just Catholic because either they are ignorant or because they simply choose to be Catholic for the sake of being Catholic and not necesarily for the objective truth. Some are, sadly. But all that means is that there are ignorant Catholics out there. It doesn't mean Catholicism isn't true.
