Debating Atheists

Okay, so how does one talk to an atheist about Catholic apologetics? I mean, we base our beliefs on the Bible to a point, but just quoting the Bible isn't going to get us anywhere with a person who doesn't believe in the Bible. So, what general tactics would you use?

Feel free to talk about any particular issue you'd like.

Hmm.. For me it totally depends on where the atheist is at. Most atheists I've talked to have key issues that are kind of the basis of their atheism. And not always entirely intellectual issues. If you are looking for Catholic resources for defend the faith to an atheist I would direct you to this page as a good place to start:

Get a copy of Handbook of Christian Apologetics by Tacelli and Kreeft.

It presents and refutes the arguments for atheism.

also, the glory of Catholicism is that it's truths do not depend solely on the Bible. believe it or not, that is not a blasphemous statment either. one could also use arguments from logic, reasoning, philosophy, and history to defend Catholicism.

i agree w/ LaudDom. find the central issue that resulted in his choosing atheism in the first place. if u can show him the other side of the argument on that issue, then he may begin to open up to the other truths that exist.....

one excruciatingly (sp?) small step at a time......

The blasted website, makes you pay for eveything! I would do almost anything to read his ultatraditionalist book but it's $6.00 and I don't have a credit card. Anyway, in reply to the above reply...

A Catholic can believe in evolution (or creationism), so don't worry about disproving it. There is however, a set of Truths that the Church pulls out of Genesis that must be respected, I reccomend this article:

As for proving the existence of God, I have a free link that somebody from this very forum gave to me. It is quite good. It is by the auther of the "Handbook of Christian Apologetics":

I would also reccomend St. Thomas Aquinas' arguement for the existence of God in the "Summa Theologica" (it is a little wordy):
