Catholic_4_Life
I found this interesting.
Early this century missionaries petitioned Rome to allow a Medal to be used instead of the cloth Scapular. Those who made this request were stationed in tropical regions and had considerable trouble preserving their Scapulars from decaying in the excessive humidity. After careful consideration, Pope Saint Pius X, in 1910, granted permission for the use of a Scapular Medal. It was to have an image of the Sacred Heart on one side and an image of Our Lady on the other and would possess the same promises and indulgences as the Brown Scapular. The Medal’s usage, however, was to be restricted. Saint Pius added explicitly to his consent that for ordinary circumstances, "I desire most vehemently that the cloth Scapulars be worn as heretofore."
I thought about getting the medal, but now I think I will stick with finding a good scapular (the one I got as a child is worn out) and keep my miraculous medal and cross on my chain. Oh, I found that at this site: http://www.catholicism.org/pages/brown.htm

CatholicCrusader
I only read the first page of this thread, so forgive me if I have made undue assumptions, but it seems to me that people are talking about taking off and putting on their Scapulars. This does not seem to make sense because one of the requirements of the Scapular is that it is worn at all times (the other two are that the individual maintains chastity and that he says the Little Office daily). Also, obviously a Scapular should not be flaunted, but it should not be so small as to be hidden so that one may wear whatever he wants. One of the benefits of the Scapular is that it promotes modesty in dress at all times. Likewise, for one to attain the benefits of the Scapular, it must be made of cloth. There are all kinds of new things with medals or different charm-like pendants, but these do not qualify as Scapulars.

Fiat_Voluntas_Tua
Catholic Crusaders you are right about taking them off and on...it should not be done...if you do it is like saying "Here Mary I don't want your protection right now, I don't want to think about you right now." And that is sooo not cool. And also the 3 requirements are correct...but the recitation of the Little Office daily can be substituted by a daily rosary. Pax et Agape per Maria. Catholic_4_Life
I would think that Mary would understand when I am taking a shower or sleeping, as long as it was near me when doing these things? And what about when you go swimming? Personally I would be affraid it would fall off, and if I am snorkeling in St. Thomas I don't want to lose it on the ocean! There HAS to be some exceptions... Fiat_Voluntas_Tua
It is all about intent...taking it off for a shower I would say is acceptable (I don't just because I like my scapular clean haha) but taking it off because you don't want to be ridiculed by peers is wrong. I know you know that. God Bless. Pax et Agape per MAria.
Mari Therese
I loves wearing a brown scapular! I wore one forever when I was a kid, but then I got out of the habit. I've been wearing one for a year now and it rocks. I also like hiding green scapulars under peoples beds and stuff so that they can be converted. Giolla
I was enrolled into the Brow Scapular on December 8th(Immaculate Conception). I was wearing before I knew I had to be enrolled. But now I'm fully devoted.
InHisLove726
The first scapular I ever received was the green Immaculate Heart of Mary scapular at a retreat, and I knew nothing about them, so I didn't know I wasn't supposed to take it off. It wasn't blessed, though. I bought a Carmelite Divine Mercy scapular about 7 months ago, and I had it blessed and got myself enrolled by my priest at Church. I kept it on for a long time, until it got itchy, then I traded it for a Carmelite scapular medal with the Sacred Heart on one side, and the Virgin of Carmel on the other. I found out I am allergic to wool like my mom is. Everytime I would wear the woolen one, I would get a rash. I love scapulars though!

jenn91988
I wear the brown scapular, but I'm not enrolled. I got frustrated when trying to find a priest to enroll me, so I've given up for now but I wear it anyways.
