TotusTuusMaria
JMJ Does anyone know of a community of religious sisters that work with at-risk children and/or teens? Thanks! God bless!
shortnun
The first community that comes to mind is the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Healing Love. I was first introduced to them here on these boards. And I know there have been quite a few threads about them, if you wanted to do a search. I'm certain there are other communities... but that's the only one that comes to mind right this second. There is a community in Kentucky, I believe, whose ministry is pro-life focused toward crisis pregnancies. stlmom
You might want to look at the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, Northern Province--they operate some homes for at risk boys and girls. Also, although not exclusively centered on at risk kids, you might look at the Salesian Sisters, who focus on youth work. Good luck and God bless! They continue to do fabulous work and have a TON of supporters/benefactors....this isn't always true, of course....but a "sometimes good" indicator is how well a community "doing" is the amount of support they get from "the faithful" - again, not an absolute...but in the case of the Salesians, it happens to be true, they are very well loved and supported. Their places in NJ, while perhaps not specifically designed for at risk teens, would certainly have the opportunity to minister to at risk teens simply by virtue of their location. philosophette
Hey, I am in formation with the Salesian Sisters (I am nearing the end of my 1st year.) We do work with at-risk youth. Many of our schools (elementary and HS) take young people that other schools have rejected, we have scholarships at our camp for disadvantaged young people, we have presences Los Angeles and San Francisco that work with the very poorest and migrant families, we are in NY, NJ, Louisana, FL, TX, CA, AZ.... and are looking at other places to open more houses. We have youth centers, food pantries, schools, Religious Ed, camps, oratories, and even work in schools that the Salesians do not own.... wherever there is a possibility and a need. WEBSITE We are also working more and more with the Salesian priests and brothers who also work with at risk-youth and partnering with them in ministry. So we work with the young, in whatever capacity is needed, so if you love young people and you want to work with them, then we probably have a place for you! I'm very happy in the life. The young people bring me great joy. Edited March 24, 2008 by philosobrat

cathoholic_anonymous
The Corpus Christi Carmelites do some work with AIDS orphans in the Caribbean, where their novitiate is. They have houses in America too, but I don't know if they have the same ministry.

littlesister
Don't miss the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. They've been doing this all over the world since the 1600's.
Domine ut Videam
The Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy Check out these sisters! I just talked to two of them at BC's vocation fair this past friday and they were so awesome. They do a lot of prison ministry and work with rehabilitation of young women, keeping them off the streets, etc... They also do work with the terminally and since they are founded by St.Faustina....all about Divine Mercy! Totus Tuus, Lauren
