Jutty1224
In the parish that I grew up in and in the parish I belong to now, its been common that no hymn is sung at the end of Mass on Palm Sunday and the priest and altar server's leave in silence. During my years as a student at Magdalen College we always sang a recessional hymn. What is the liturgically proper thing to do?
Laudate_Dominum
Technically the recessional hymn is not a part of Mass and if a priest were to prefer a silent recessional at every Mass there would be nothing wrong with this. I believe that some parishes opt for a silent recessional on Palm Sunday to signify the transition to the Passion of Christ. Either way I don't think it is a question of what is more liturgically correct, it may have more to do with personal taste or local custom.
