BG45
Me and the Pope got into an arguement about which of us was more Catholic. So, he had a seat on his funny little chair, said he was more Catholic than I, and as I opened my mouth to protest, I decided that I was so Catholic I would submit to his authority.
That, was just awesome. Deb, I don't know any converts like that either, and I think it would almost be refreshing to run into one. I've yet to run into a Catholic offline who would make me even consider the possibility of conversion, at least my own age. Let me just open myself up a bit here: I've been to Daily Mass twice. I've gone almost weekly to Adoration since my cousin became pregnant and high risk. I've yet to see someone my age there, and to be honest, the first time I went to Adoration I could hear the whispers in the hallway between two middle aged to older folks, "Can you believe a young person is here?" Autumn Dusk, Sorry I didn't hit you before Deb with a reply here in the post but it loaded behind your post and I just realized. Sorry to hear you've encountered some of the type of convert the entire article seems focused on, and I can see the annoyance in questions like "Should the altar really be carpeted", I know they'd probably annoy me too. Ash Wednesday, I can see the point on being too pushy, and too relaxed in comparison to each other pretty well. It happens more than we admit in Protestant churches too I know that the whole concept of converts to Catholicism kind of made me tilt my head in astonishment the first time I heard of it, Scott Hahn, I continue to say "darn him", made some very compelling points. Missy, They were off the earthquake scale? Bro Mark, Sorry I just can't seem to type your username right to address you that way. You put it quite nicely. SMM, That's funny, but true. I could see Chesterton doing it... Prose, Aww *hugs* Cathoholic Anonymous, Well put, and a nice proverb. Also kudos on the book, I'd not realized you had a published book before. Paddington, Totally off topic, but is it true there's actually a new Paddington book coming out about Paddington having trouble with the Immigration authorities? I thought I read it on the Beeb, but not sure. Your entire post was well thought out and excellent; and reminded me on the lapsed Catholic to Evangelical about a number of people I've seen in my life, including a dear friend who recently got married. The point on dishonesty was truly excellent, and one I had not considered in the least.
Socrates
You know, it's articles like this that are off-putting to potential Catholic converts...the whole "you're going to be nothing more than a petulant holier than thou child who will be sure he/she is holier than the Pope" thing. Sort of like how a lot of Baptists I know start off with "OMG YOU R GOING TO HELL!!1!". http://www.beliefnet.com/story/198/story_19843_1.html I Hate Converts (and I Am One) He goes on like that for three pages. Granted he brings up some good points along the way (and some truly wacky examples), but the whole angry tone of the article...
BG45, frankly I'd ignore this rather silly article. Don't let it have any effect on whether you decide to join the Catholic Church. Good Catholics welcome a zealous convert. While some individuals may lack prudence, the fact is that many converts simply are more zealous for the Faith than many "cradle Catholics" who take it for granted. Many of the finest Catholics I know are converts. My own parents are both converts. And the more obnoxious, petulant Catholics I know are not converts, but cradle Catholics, mostly transplants from New York or New Jersey . . . BG45
Socrates, If I allowed too much weight on the opinions of others, I would not be a Christian. Were I to convert, I'd hardly place this article in my path. Had no clue on your parents both being converts though. And don't tell Missy about the obnoxious cradle Catholics from Jersey
