Problem. The report only cites data from as early as 2001. Please refer to the following image:

You will note that the graph (citations listed on this page) contains a great deal of what we scientists call "fine structure", that is, lots of very tiny bumps over short time frames. These are the black lines with blue data points. However, when we look at the overall trend (the red line, which is a five year average; ie: longer time frame), the temperature continues to rise.

In other words, looking at five years worth of data is looking at too small of a picture in order to determine trends.

The linked report cites "solar cycles" as the cause of these fluctuations, and we can certainly see periodic rises and falls in temperature as though part of a roughly 10-year cycle. The problem is, each cycle ends slightly higher than where it began, with the net effect being an overall increase of temperature. In other words, while solar cycles can explain the little bumps on the graph, they cannot explain the net trend of gradual increase of temperature. They cannot explain why the red line just continues to rise. It is this continued increase that is worrisome to scientists.

These data over the past five years are not enough to neither prove nor deny that we are going to experience an overall reversal of a trend. It could just be a "little bump", or it could be a "big bump". What we want are "big bumps". These data are not conclusive.

Cmom, you can't win. Even if they are wrong this time, next time they come back and say they have refined their techniques and have better technology, you can't use their past failures against them.

But... people... the facts are here!!! Check out this graph!

As you can see, the lack of those treasure hunting rascals have gone down in the past while, and the global temperature has gone up. Maybe their steal-from-the-rich mentality has kept others from polluting the environment?

No, it must be the excessive amounts of rum that they drink. Everyone knows that drinking rum gives you horrible, explosive gas. Flatus, being made of carbon dioxide and methane, two of the principle greenhouse gasses, is what is making the world's temperature rise.

Laddies, I never thought that I would say this (being Irish Catholic and all), but for the good of the environment, we must get rid of the booze!

Oh ... uhm, well ...

With fewer pirates, there's more rum to go around? Ya! That's it!

If I did that, Momma #1 would disown me. :( She's in your avatar, and doesn't like fighting amongst the pham.

Momma #2 wouldn't be too happy, either.

Your graph only covers a 150 year time span. The planet is millions of years old. The large spike in recent years could be part of the fine structure of even larger graph.

I think that global warming is a croc of carp. I do also believe that is doesn't hurt anything to be kind to the envirmoment.
