Book Recommendations And Brief Update

Deus te Amat

Recommended Posts

I am falling in love with Our Lord, and becoming at peace with the prospect of waiting a few more years. His will be done.

I am simply wondering if you all have any book recommendations for a young discerner of the religious life as I continue to explore this path.

Praise be to God!

I agree... quite excellent.

I would also suggest reading through the pages of this pinned thread.

Some ideas:

The ascetical works of Saint Alphonsus de Liguori (in particular The True Spouse of Jesus Christ).
The Passion of Saint Therese of Lisieux, by Guy Gaucher
I Want to See God/I Am a Daughter of the Church
Treatise on the Love of God, by Saint Francis de Sales

awwwe  thanks for the update, DtA. Few things hold more promise than a desire to love and follow the Lord in simplicity.

Casey, Michael. Sacred Reading: The Ancient Art of Lectio Divina. Liguori, MO. Liguouri Publications, 1995. Very good introduction to the practice of Lectio Divina.

Fry, Timothy, OSB. RB1980: The Rule of St. Benedict in Latin and English with Notes. Collegeville, MN: The Liturgical Press. 1981. Long and expensive, but has good introductory material about the history of monasticism. It also has a series of essays on various monastic topics. Naturally the emphasis is heavily benedictine.

Louth, Andrew. The Origins of the Christian Mystical Tradition: From Plato to Denys. Oxford: Clarendon Press. 1981. This was originally a series of lectures given by the author through the Faculty of Theology. It is not exactly bedtime reading but you will learn a lot from it.

Tugwell, Simon, O.P. Ways of Imperfection: An Exploration of Christian Spirituality. Springfield, ILL: Templegate Publishers. One of the points he makes is that spirituality has to do with the whole of Christian life, not just prayer and contemplation.

Fr. Antony Maria OSB

Hey Eda, glad to hear things are going well for you! I would definately recommend The Interior Castle by St. Teresa of Avila and Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales. And The Story of a Soul by St. Therese of Lisieux (sp?). These don't necessarially have to deal with discernment, simply advancement in the spiritual life.

May God bless and protect you always in all of your endeavors, especially your discernment!

Your Brother in Christ,

Joe

Hey Joe! Things are wonderful thank you! I hope they are for you as well. Thank you for the recommendations, I've read Story of a Soul, but so many people have been recommending it to me lately that I think I'm going to read it again.

God bless and Mary protect you! Prayers....

I just met with a new spiritual director.

His will be done! I am full of love and joy at the prospect of following wherever He calls. It will be hard, but for God, It is worth it!

I have not read this book, but it seems great regarding discernment: Religious Vocation an Unnecessary Mystery by Fr. Richard Butler OP (http://www.tanbooks.com/index.php/page/shop:flypage/product_id/687/keywords/religious,vocation/)
