Laudate_Dominum

We sang City of God, as well as two of the others that you wanted: Lord You Have Come and Gather Us In.

Personally, I don't care for City of God because it sounds like On Top of Old Smokey during the verses and that is all I can think about when we sing.

Servant of the Secret Fire

Personally I like City of God.

It seems entirely appropriate to sing of what we are being sent out to do in the Mass.

Indeed if we take our faith at its fullest then there can be no separation between such work and focusing on God (both within and outwith the liturgy).

I'm sure the works of Dan Schutte and David Haas are edifying for many people, but I go to Mass for the Mass and when speaking of this I could care less about the myriad of religious tunes out there that are not the Divine Liturgy. I attribute the plague of religious jingles that have invaded the Liturgy first to the baroque period and the Protestant reformation (amplified by the neuroses of post-enlightenment culture) and second to the perversities and superficialities of the 1970's liturgical establishment.

i like City of God and Christ Be Our Light. i prefer traditional music for Mass to get me profoundly deeper and closer to God. it's like going to a whole new level, if you understand it and are ready to go there. otherwise, both are great for the people they work for.

e.g. we often sing City of God at this noon Mass i go to in the middle of the business district on Thursdays. a law firm converted a rear room into a nice chapel. he invites all people and provides a nice catered lunch. most of the people are business people on their lunch break. i find this format to be decently suited for its purpose.

on weekdays i go to a Novus Ordo (Ordinary Form) Mass at the local Cathedral. on Sunday i choose to go to the traditional Latin Mass.

being Catholic is cool because we have everything, everywhere.

Yeah, and that is the bare minimum that is required by Church law. It is yet laudable and recommended to observe the three hour fast or even from midnight if possible.
