Jutty1224
Did anyone's parish use this hymn at Mass this Sunday? I had suggested it to our group for us to sing it this Sunday becuase its based on text from today's 1st reading and Gospel. I had also suggested "Gather Us In", "Christ, Be Out Light" and "Lord, You Have Come". Instead we sang "The Summons", "By The Waking of our Hearts", "Behold the Lamp", and "Companions on A Journey"
CatherineM
I like newer songs, which gets me slapped on around here. When we do older songs, a couple of older people are happy, but most of the parishioners just hang their heads and don't even bother to pick up the older song book. When one was announced a couple of months ago, I actually heard moans. I believe in maintaining the solemnity of the mass, but I want people to feel the music is bringing them closer to God. If the older music makes people miserable, that won't happen.
CatherineM
Oh, and those of you who only believe in using traditional music, don't hit me too hard this time, I'm still sore from the last time.
Laudate_Dominum
My parish didn't use that hymn but major props for making an effort to select the hymns based on the Mass of the day.

While I certainly admit that I hope Catholic culture steers more in a traditional direction and reclaims some of the treasures that have been buried for a few decades, I realize that things are what they are and I have no problem with other Catholics who are attached to different things. I believe that we should do our best with things the way they are and if someone belongs to a healthy and faith filled parish that has no interest in traditional things I don't think the proper thing is to force it down their throats. I'm certainly not interested in hitting you over the head because you prefer modern hymns to Gregorian chant. Of course I try to explain why I believe what I believe and hopefully do some good in the process.

The refrain is something like this: Let us build the city of God, may our tears be turned into dancing. For the Lord, our light and our love, has turned the night into day. Autumn Dusk
1. Come! Live in the light! Shine with the joy and the love of the Lord! We are called to be light for the Kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city of God! Refrain: We are called to act with justice, we are called to love tenderly, we are called to serve one another; to walk humbly with God! 2. Come! Open your heart! Show Your mercy to all those in fear! We are called to be hope for the hopeless so all hatred and blindness will be no more! 3. Sing! Sing a new song! Sing of that great day when all will be one! God will reign, and we'll walk with each other as sisters and brothers united in love! Ahh here's the song I was thinking of
Laudate_Dominum
Ah yes, a David Haas number if I'm not mistaken. I can't remember the last time I heard that one. Is it common at your parish?

Jaime
When I worked at St Thomas, I brought in one of the students and my guitar to the liturgist's office. I played "We are Called" while she tap danced on the woman's desk. Yes I was trying to introduce "Liturgical Tap". I may or may not have been making a statement about liturgical dance in general. Oh and she was not pleased. When I first became Catholic I belonged to what some might call a "liberal" parish and they used these kind of songs. Although I had to leave that parish because I didn't agree with how they lived out the Catholic Faith I can safely say that many of the people there were amazing in the area of reaching out to the poor and needy. I was involved in the Saint Vincent De Paul thing and almost every day we would go collect things (beds, food, etc) and drive a big truck full of stuff out to the ghetto to give it away. It was as close to being Robin Hood as I think I'll get. hehe
