Harry Potter Is No Hero

Apparently Father Amorth, who is a chief exorcist of rome and apparently the Church's leading exorcist, has spoken out against them, which I find interesting. I think the key here, as far as how he and the pope feel -- is how appropriate or potentially harmful the books are for those who do not have a strong concept of what magic is and what it isn't -- I think the warnings are meant to address, in particular, the best interests of impressionable young children.

So I think people ought to try to understand what it is Vatican officials are trying to say without taking offense or getting so defensive about it. It's not exactly authority or binding but there's nothing wrong with hearing them out. I'm trying to read the books myself and I'm not exactly riveted by them like others apparently are. I am feeling about as mildly engaged and ho-hum about them as I have watching the movies. Just kind of glad they are over with after each one ends. So I guess if I am able to have kids and they ask me for my opinion, I'll say "Well kids, I think Harry Potter is kind of boring, actually."

Esteemed and dear Ms. Kuby!

Many thanks for your kind letter of February 20th and the informative book which you sent me in the same mail. It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly.

I would like to suggest that you write to Mr. Peter Fleetwood, (Pontifical Council of Culture, Piazza S. Calisto 16, I00153 Rome) directly and to send him your book.

Sincere Greetings and Blessings,

+ Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Esteemed and dear Ms. Kuby,

Somehow your letter got buried in the large pile of name-day , birthday and Easter mail. Finally this pile is taken care of, so that I can gladly allow you to refer to my judgment about Harry Potter.

Sincere Greetings and Blessings,

+ Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Yeah, that letter doesn't seem to say much except for "hey, this is an important issue, but you might wanna talk to this other guy about it." He also says that it's an important issue, which actually gives some credence to these extremely long Harry Potter debates--because he seems to think it's worth discussing.

I think the exorcist's comments are more valid if you want to say that the Vatican is opposed to Harry Potter.

It says more than that. He states that the books have "subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity."

The Master of seduction is Satan, and he always does so in a subtle way.

Just because he's pope doesn't make him 100% right. There were popes who said the world was flat.

I believe the Holy Father to be a very intelligent man, his judgment on Potter should be held at a very high level, more so than the opinion of our own. And because something is fiction does not make it ok to read... ie The Golden Compass, Romance Novels... which are basically porn...

No pope has ever defended that the world is flat. There were popes who thought that the sun revolved around the earth. But that's a whole lot different than saying the world is flat.

Whatever it was they were wrong, it happened once, it can happen again.
