In your view, who is going to do something to end abortion in this country? Or make the greatest headway?
I don't know who, but so far i know Huckabee wants to change it through ammendment, and that is only one of the things he wants to change through ammendments, which is not easy. Like Loungedaddy I agree he's not 100% conservative, in the whole sense of the word. I also don't know how he'd fare in th general elction. So far I'm divided but i do like Thompson. Ash Wednesday
Huckabee will do as much as McCain, Romney, or even Bush to end abortion in this country. Nothing. Sure, they all have intentions to, but honestly, it's not going to get done, even with our game of Supreme Court Roulette.
I understand what you're saying, but people use this kind of talk as an excuse to vote for someone that is pro-choice. I wouldn't say that Bush did nothing, or that pro-life politicians throw no weight whatsoever. He didn't END abortion but he did do some things in our favor. Voting for someone who has conservative moral stances on the family is better than having a pro-choice politician in office who believes in unrestricted abortion -- and usually what follows, such as euthanasia and gay marriage. Some people seem disappointed if a president does not end abortion 1 minute after taking the oath of office. Let's face it, this is going to be a long fight, and, barring a miracle SCOTUS ruling or sudden pro-life supermajority in Congress and 38 state legislatures, we are going to have to chip away at this on several fronts simultaneously. Lounge Daddy
Not only that, but I think many people have unrealistic notions about the fight against abortion in this country. I have talked to several people that actually seem to think that the president is king of the US, and can pass a law outlawing abortion. Some people do not understand that the president doesn't pass legislation. 1st its up to the Supreme Court to reverse their decision (they are not supposed to pass legislation either). And we are building up to that moment when they will. Bush has been very active in this respect.
Mercy me
I agree that Bush has been very good on the abortion issue. Partial birth is gone as is federal funding. Embryonic stem cells were a battle but he stood firm there, too. Most importantly he appointed conservative justices we will interpret the law not make law which is what happened in Roe v. Wade. The next president needs to continue this but appointing strict constructionist judges. I am still undecided on who will get my vote. I have eliminated both Huckabee and McCain. Neither of them are conservative and I am. While I respect that people change their positions I am not sold on Romney. He strikes me as a little slick like he is saying what he needs to say. Thompson I really like but he did not hold his own in Senate committee hearings. Glenn rolled over him regularly and Thompson was the chairman! I question how strong he will be. Giuliani has the strength alright. He sais that he supports the law as it is but says that he will appoint constructionist judges. I am not sure about him either. He definately did a good job is NYC but he infringed on a few constitutional rights along the way.
