I Am Legend

Luthien

I found it to be very grim. I had heard a whiff of the original story before I saw it, and I think that did color my experience of it.

NOTE: contains spoilers!

Taken on it's own, it's a very grim sort of existence, even at the end. It doesn't really resolve so much as just leave a glimmer of hope for the survivors. The interesting thing about the zombie vampire people (at least in the movie) is that it takes away what is essentially human: reason and free will. It appears that the monsters are all rage and and aggression. We aren't even shown for sure that the cure is completely effective. The aggression and elevated temperature/blood pressure/etc. seems to be remedied, but we never see the cured woman conscious/reasonable. My thought at the end was, if the woman was cured, why didn't he attempt to save the cured woman as well?

Warning. SPOILER.

Why didn't he just throw the grenade and then go into the little fireplace shelter instead of blowing himself up with the grenade? That didn't make sense.

Also... I think the computer generated zombies were totally unneeded. Why in the heck do we feel the need to computer animate humans? What happened to make-up and good acting? I didn't get it. it made what would have been somewhat believable into something that wasn't believabe at all.

But I did like the movie and thought it was pretty awesome overall.

This is one of my biggest gripes with Hollywood right now. When you replace REAL extras covered in makeup with CGI models that do not physically exist, you lessen the believability (is that even a word?) . I'm not anti-CGI, and if done right it looks absolutely beautiful and even real; however, there are just too many films that have mediocure CGI renders which ruin it for me. CGI used to be special, something you would rarely see and when you did it made you think it was real. Now, it's way over used and the market is flooded with movies that are filled with sub-par CGI.

This is one of those movies that actually didn't have me get bothered by the poor un-believable CGI Zombies, I cared more for the acting, and the story and characters than I did the SFX, Unfortunately I AM LEGEND did not have very good CGI at all, most of it wasn't believable, but it was entertianing, it was good overall.

Great Acting, by Will Smith
Great Storyline
Great concept
Poorly handled SFX.

Overall I'd give it a 8.5 out of 10 for me, what stopped it from being a 9 was the SFX only.

I actually read somewhere that the director orginally filmed with actors as the zombies, but didn't like the way it turned out and turned to more advanced CGI in place.

Also the big 'twist' was left out (if you mean the one in the book that really makes the title make sense IMHO).

It was an interesting movie to me. I was all wondering what would I do in that type of situation?! I def would have left my dog home every day, especially the day after he ran off! Shouldn't that teach him to just keep him in the house !!

The worst special effect, by far, was the computer generated deer.

What is more expensive, a few animal trainers on set for a couple weeks or a team of computer geeks working for a few months on making deer run down a street filled with cars?

It's gotten ridiculous.

It would have been very very expensive to pay for the damage repairs to all the cars that the hooves and antlers would cause. And, it was, from what I understand, filmed on the real streets of new york. I'm pretty darn sure there was no way they would have been allowed to release all those deer into the streets.

But I am with you about the CGI. They should have used real people, and they certainly could have done a better job on the deer. I've seen plenty of CGI that was so real that I didn't know it was fake until the commentary told me.

Finally saw it. It was overall better than I expected. The cgi zombies didn't bother me that much, but I'd heard so much negative about them, I guess I was prepared to be underwhelmed.
I'm now really curious as to what the original twist ending was.
The ending in this movie felt like a tacked-on "happy ending."

Happy Ending?
I thought Will Smith dies? How can that be a happy ending? =P
anyway, I'll probably wait to see it. I've been itching to see the Great Debaters.
