see... one time they tried on a dress that they thought was size 6, so when they go on to try on a dress again, it doesn't fit. turns out that they were dyslexic, and the first dress was really a size 9! so they get all depressed thinking that they're supposed to be a size 6.
I thought sizes only came in even numbers?

R1 = 0 R2= 2

If this woman is at a healthy weight, I think an insightful response would be to refer her to someone who could help her deal with her self image problem. If she says this just to get comments back on how great she looks, she should pray for a reduction in her vanity. If she was fat, a good response would be, "what can I do to help you lose a few pounds?"
Most women who are truly fat, don't go around remarking all the time on how fat they are. It is obvious to themselves and anyone else.

R1: SOS - You want to be stabbed? Chocolate alone doesn’t make you fat. Stop hating chocolate!!!!!!!! It does more good than bad.

R2: 7 - This is a MUCH better respond. He isnt rude nor is he giving in to her comment. He is acknowledging that the media's idea of beauty isnt realistic to the average women, but then...who said she was comparing herself to a supermodel? Anyone who compares themselves to a supermodel will feel inadequate along some lines unless, of course, you ARE a supermodel, I suppose.

I dont know, I thought depending on circumstance they were both a bit insensative responses. Its a delicate subject, more so, because of the insane demands of secular society's idea of beauty (which is absurd).

I didn't come up with either of those responses, actually...those are the responses that I am told she receives. Then again, she kinda lumped me in with the "can't compare yourself to a supermodel" crowd, which isn't an accurate assessment of what I said. So it's quite possible that what she hears and what she's actually being told are two very different things.

Anyhoo, I...geesh I don't know.

Deb seems to have the right idea.

Although, I personally enjoyed response 1 :)
Response two was tactful, but of course, evading the ?.

In my mind there are 2 situations:
1) person isn't fat - tell them they're not and move on - if person does this often, unnecessarily, address what their issue may be.

2) person is fat (and would not be likely to make the stmt to begin w/) - it should be admited that yes, they are. Why lie? Let's not be "nice" Christians for the sake of disillusionment. If they are hence making this stmt b/c they want to change, then offer your support.

Btw - not all sizes are even, there are odd, though somewhat less common (although I have never seen even and odd together in the same clothing line...)

Aloysius - very nice once again
