Spamity Calamity
Awesome maybe this will come as a surprise to the secularists but regular folk don't like to have atheism shoved down their throat.
Autumn Dusk
I think its actually becuase it looks like an ugly version of Narnia, which it is. The actual book is poorly written, especially going into the latter versions. Its a bit orwellian and silly. That and having a female protagonist and female supporting characters is not very good for box office ratings, or even selling profits at all. I'm not sure what all that means but the bottom line seems to be that if the film eventually makes money, I'd assume we could expect to see the other two. littleflower+JMJ
Exactly LD! Its ONLY number one because they were the ONLY new movie out this past week i dont know about you but thats NOT winning to me! They had no one to beat! LOL and I"m pretty sure their not going going to get that much because so many new movies are coming out that will have them low on the box office in no time. In fact, their could be the very doom of New Line Cinema. It took them OVER 200 million to make this movie (not including marketing) and they've only made 26 million *opening* weekend. And that too me, sounds pretty good! lol
Laudate_Dominum
But seriously, they were planning this to be a new blockbuster franchise to rival the Chronicles of Narnia, but the first installment in the Narnia series opened with more than twice the dollar signs at the same time of year ($65.5 million as opposed to $26 million). They spent like 200 million dollars and if the movie doesn't start doing a whole lot better I doubt the studio will back sequels.

Laudate_Dominum
Here are some opening stats I just gleaned from a website. The Golden Compass opened at $26 million. The Chronicles of Narnia opened at $65.6 million at the same time of year. Some recent movies (mediocre or flops) compared to Golden Compass: Halloween (a really lame movie) opened at $30.5 million and had a smaller distribution. Resident Evil opened at $24 million with a substantially smaller distribution. The Bee Movie opened at $25.6 million with comparable distribution. Beowulf opened at $27.5 million Enchanted opened at $34.4 million with comparable distribution. Blockbuster movies Spider-Man 3 opened at $151 million with $230 million internationally or $381 million worldwide. The Passion of the Christ opened at $83 million. 300 opened at $70.8 million Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire opened at $102.7 million Bourne Ultimatum = $69.3 million I still think it is still possible that this movie will get sequels, but I doubt it will ever rival the Narnia franchise and the fate of the sequels is certainly up in the air. It certainly won't go down in history as one of the great movies of our time. lol Well, I guess anything is possible considering some lame movies that ended up becoming cult classics.
