St. Isadores Catholic Church (visit)

My wife and I just returned from a visit to 10:30 am Mass at St. Isadores Catholic Church here in Grand Rapids, MI.

I found this church much more inviting than the Church I was raised in (St. Alphonus) even though we weren't greeted by anyone. The demenor of the whole church was just different for some reason.

When we walked through the doors to the sanctuary was like walking through time. And being part of a liturgical worship service is always a blessing. My wife commented after the service "You are right about one thing Adam, you definitely get alot more out of a liturgical service then a non-liturgical one. In a Baptist service things seem rushed".

There were two priests leading the service. The one question I have is that I noticed the priest did not break the host during the Eucharist. Is this normal?

Overall the whole experience was good though. I'll admit it was a little hard to hear in the back with all of the children around us :)

But there is one thing we both have to know. We saw something that was very strange and seemed utterly out of place and left us really wondering- In the pews there were the normal pockets for the Bibles and hymnals- but why on earth are there little clips on the pews? The clips looked like what you would hook a coat or something to. What's up with that? :D

I also wanted to add as an afterthought- there was a complete lack of people worshipping Mary, which Catholic Churches are so often accused off. However the mention of the "Savior Jesus Christ" happened over and over, and the Gospel Message was proclaimed! amesome!

hehe coolio.

i dont know what the hooks were for.

they didn't break the host at all? they don't normally do that at the point where he says He broke the bread they do it a lil later. (never quite understood the logic behind it but w/e)

oh, and yeah, we called ahead. they knew you were coming and hid all the Mary worship ;):P

On the hooks, I click the bulletin, we have clips things that have a nob to push, is this what you are referring to?

Yeah, that!

Yeah, I was watching pretty closely the whole time, He didn't seem to break it at all. Isn't it usually broken in half? Does it make any difference if it is broken or not to Catholic?

Also, why are there elaborate "shrines" behind the alter? I'm sorry, i don't know how else to describe it. In the middle of it was a cupboard where the Eucharist elements were. Is it just all ment to be artwork? Like a statue, or is there some other purpose to it, and why was there a cupboard in it?

Also, (and finally ;) ), why don't the priests stick around and talk to anyone after the service? I had a lot of questions I would have liked to ask at that time.

Bro Adam, that's great. The clips are probably something to hook a hat on for the gentlemen. As for the priest not breaking the host, this is not in the rubrics for the Mass where it says, "He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said..." Many times, especially if there is a larger host being used especially for the Consecration, this will be done at the Adnus Dei (Lamb of God). Otherwise, it really isn't part of the Mass.

If you want to see our priest, you must see him between the Sunday Masses, unless of course he is teaching at Sunday School. After the last Mass he rushes off to delivier Communion to all the nursing homes.
