What's The Most Inspirational Book You've Read?

My buddy's birthday is coming up. She's one of my closest friends. We have a thing where we give each other books for our birthdays. These books are usually philosophy based but motivations for growth and understanding of LIFE.

She just gave me Tuesdays with Morrie for my birthday (I won't tell you when it is/was ;) ) and she gave me the Colour Purple for CHRISTmas...

But now I'm pressed to give her something equally as good....any suggestions?

Story of a Soul.

I just finished "5 People" and it's really good, but if you want to give something that specifically preaches the Faith this is the best one in my opinion. Also "The Prophet" by Kalil Gibran is really good too, but not specifically Christian. A neato hippy professor told me that "The Prophet" can only be recieved as a gift and never be bought for oneself.

I can't say.. Some candidates would be:

St. Teresa of Avila's Autobiography

True Devotion to Mary

"Calls" from the message of Fatima by Sister Lucia

Stages of Prayer by Sr. Immaculata

Oh, one more (hehe), "Saint Among Savages", it's a biography of St. Isaac Jogues but it really describes the Canadian Martyrs (North American Martyrs) lives in general. It's very intense! They totally gave of themselves and eventually gave their lives to save souls.

Kahlil Gibran is cool... if ur gunna get the prophet get the big verson with his art in it. The Prophet is Christian, it refers to God as Love. :P But I see what u mean.

I would recommend The Five People You Meet In Heaven. It reminds you of the many "life lessons" that all of us need to learn (or relearn). It's not entirely religious, but very spiritual. I just finished it and I was incredibly moved. It made me cry, and I'm not one to cry over books. I started a thread about it a couple weeks ago, that has a brief synopsis of the book and several of the themes, if you are interested

THe Question of God: C S Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex and the Meaning of Life by Dr. Armand M Nicholi, Jr

Peter Kreefts review on the back cover.

"Some books are fair, scholarly, and objective. Others are challenging, arresting, and subjectively moving. When a book is both, it is inforgettable. Such is The Question of God. We are caught, plunged, into Freud's and Lewis's lives, honestly, deeply, with both head and heart. It is as exciting as a novel, and we must supply the ending."

Catholic books:

I am a big fan of “The Seven Storey Mountain” - I love Thomas Merton.

Thomas Merton’s “The Ascent To Truth” is also a good time for me.

I also love Hans Urs von Balthasar – esp. his writings on the Liturgy, and also his “The Moment of Christian Witness”.

Others:

I also loved the humor in “Catch 22”; and “If On a Winter’s Night a Traveler” by Italo Calvino is a great read.

I second the Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, and also recommend "Looking for Mary, or The Blessed Mother and Me" by Beverly D'Onofrio. She also wrote Riding in Cars with Boys. Its about her trip to Medjourje(sp). Warning: Not completely Orothodox, but a wonderful personal account of finding your way back to Jesus.
