Er...I think if I had kids they'd be more traumatized by me going to jail than the dog dying.

That may be true, but it does provide a witness to the kids as to the willingness of a father to protect home and family. And a traumatized kid might cause a jury to think twice before convicting, especially if there was no warrant.

OK, maybe what if the cop was going after a child? Or trying to rape the wife? Is that not worth going to jail over in order to protect them? (Assuming that you could find a jury to convict in such a case).
Well, he's a cop. You would go to jail just to protect your dog? I wouldn't. He's supposed to protect me...
Is this a serious comment? Yes, I would be willing to stand up for my rights as a citizen to not have people come onto my property and damage my property (the dog) without proper legal permissions.

Would you stand up to him or her if a cop came to your house and said he was going to bash all of your windows in for no reason? Of course you would.

This is the same situation. The police officer came to do damage to a family's personal property. IT has nothing to do with cuteness, or attachment, or being a "family member". It has everything to do with the fact that no one has the right to come and destroy your personal property. Period.

It would be but we're talking about a dog here. I can get another one at the pet store and its the same thing. Not so with my kids and my wife.

Er, true but fighting a lawmen really only gets you in more trouble. Usually prison--especially if you assault or kill him. Best to sue the department afterwards.
