cmaD2006
My original question ...
What is the difference between envy and jealousy? I've tried looking on the web for a clear and definite answer but it is mostly mud. If you can put some supporting information (catechism, Bible passages, other sources) that would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

I am assuming that you're writing this because Sacred Scripture uses the word 'jealous' of God (is that correct?)
Actually I'm trying to define the two terms with regards to sin ... the closest I've gotten is: envy: desiring what someone else has to the point that you desire harm towards the person, or become elated when the person suffers (etc). covet: desiring what someone else has. jealousy: an disordered attachment to another person such that you want the person to only be with you (????) and no one else I'm not sure if jealousy can apply to an inanimate object/things. If a more precise and clear definition could be made, as well as some references that would be great -- I haven't found anything that is clear online.
I hope that helped some?
A bit ... it at least confirms my thoughts about how God is a "jealous" God. (And thank you for the original response).

Unhelpfully the Catholic Encyclopedia takes 'jealousy' to be synonymous with 'envy' but what it provides is indeed a textbook definition of the later likewise for 'covetousness'. You are right to suppose that jealous cannot be applied to objects, thats is covetousness, jealousy is reserved to the desiring of persons.
