premed_jakey
A children’s fantasy film that stars Nicole Kidman and features a little girl on a quest to kill God has some Christian groups upset over what they believe is a ploy to promote atheism to kids.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,305487,00.html I have never read the books, so I cant say that much about it, but have any of you read them? What do you think about the books, the controversy, and all that?
Totus Tuus
The movie looks so good. It's a shame the morality doesn't register.
premed_jakey
I agree, the movie looks so good, and I think that people just dont want the books to be picked up by the movie, since the book is what has all the objectionable material, not the movie. azaelia
There's still objectionable material present in the movie, no matter how negligible. It's the same story, and whether or not they tone down the blatant anti-Catholicism in the movie, it will still promote the same message. That's the point of the story...it wouldn't be the same story without it. They can't remove the objectionable material completely without changing the entire story. I am boycotting this movie and I encourage everyone else who upholds moral values to do the same. There is nothing redeeming about this story. Personally I don't think the movie looks all that great anyway.

CrossCuT
On facebook I joined the "I do not Support the Golden Compass" group, and alomst the very day after, a friend decided he would take the opportunity to write a nice two post message on my wall about how stupid it was the boycott the movie. Here are some of his arguments:
Claire, do you really think Golden Compass will be evil? I mean first of all Nicole Kidman (the star) has said she wouldn't in good conscience, as a devout Catholic, join a film she found bashed God.
Yeah, cause claiming to be catholic in Hollywood really means anything these days.
Did you also know that the "god" that the characters in the book are battling is merely an impostor who only claims to be God. This "God" has deceived the church in many worlds and has taken a somewhat dictatorial control. The purpose of the film is the drive to regain control so the people can worship the real God!
jmjtina
This series is in direct rebuttal to C.S. Lewis's Narnia series IMHO. the author is a known atheist. They depict God as a fraud, and establish a "Republic of Heaven". After destroying the original of course. nice. Just because Nicole Kidman is in it, does not mean that she made it fully aware that the series is in direct opposition to her faith. She may have a fashion advisor, but something tells me a religious advisor isn't necessarily employed by top notch actors. besides, Prince Caspian is coming to theaters!!!! Servant of the Secret Fire
I also am debating whether or not to boycott it. My initial instinct was to do so, but I'm beginning to wonder. I've had a couple of people point out to me that I went to see the Da Vinci Code, but I don't feel this is quite the same. I reckoned that it would be easier to debunk Dan Brown's conspiracy theories having read the books and seen the film. With Pullman's work however it seems to me there aren't so many specific things to refute - it's his whole atheistic worldview that is the problem. I suppose we need to be careful to how we respond, as the "religion" he attacks is really the worst of what we sinners can make of religion (oppressive, truth-censoring, abusive ...) and it could be all too easy to provide him with more ammunition and lead people further away from the Christ. Indeed I have seen a few people comment on the net on the tragic irony that on some moral themes he does speak the truth, all the while denying the existence of Truth Himself. Of course the other thing is that the atheistic theme is not clear in the 1st book and apparently they have toned things down further in the film. I assume Nicole Kidman has not read the 2nd and 3rd books. Sad, she may well get a shock.
jmjtina
the Da Vinci Code was an adult film. This film's main audience is children. I don't know about you, but when it's a wolf in sheeps clothing presented to and for children, it's an easier decision for me to make. Good intentional parents may totally be unaware and take thier children, see the movie and buy the books for further reading. (Go to Barnes and Noble and even Wal-Mart to see evidence of the promotion) At least the people I encounter will be aware of why I am against this movie. And then they will decide for themselves. good Christian parents don't want to expose their children to something so blatantly Anti-Christian. goldbug16
I'm going to boycott it, but not by holding up signs along the road and near the movie theater and wearing sandwhich boxes to work or anything. I'm just not going to see it and if anyone asks me about it, tell them why. The director of the film outright said "I'm actually glad that people are boycotting it, because that will encourage more people to come and see it." Unfortunately, the preview looks pretty cool and exciting and rather like the "Narnia" trailer...At the library where I work, the "Golden Compass" book has been circulating like crazy. Romans1513
besides, Prince Caspian is coming to theaters!!!!
I watched the teaser trailer linked to on that site, and I have to say, I'm not that excited... I realize it was all computer graphics rather than the real footage, because its early, but still... Then again, Prince Caspian was probably my least favorite of the books, so maybe its that... ? /hijack Edit: I watched the other one, and it had some real footage, with Susan in it, and it looked a little better. ok. /hijack again Edited November 25, 2007 by Romans1513
Lioness For Christ
he called himself an anti-C.S. Lewis... And I once picked up the book because it looked interesting (I didn't know a thing about it) and found issues with the first chapter.. Small things but it was enough for me. ironmonk
In the book they: 'give the "GIFT" of death to God'... They equate God to basically a small rodent. Not only am I going to boycott the movie, every actor that I've seen in the preview is now on my boycott list. None of my money will go to it or anyone in it.
