Wow Justin, you sure know alot about this.

Im really happy everyone took the time to reply!
I feel better about it know since I kinda know what to expect.

But I am TOTALY using tamponds! LOLOL! Ill bring some along to the dentist!
But I hope I wont look too ballooned on monday...I will NOT miss school..especially mondays. They are my lab days and are WAY to fun to miss!

Im getting ALL of them removed...and they are ALL impacted! :(

But the whole bleeding thing in general kinda scares me...but I think Ill survive.

I sliced my finger open on a peice of glass once as I was on my way (fully robed) to a mass choir concert, and instead of gushing all over the place, I decided to put it in my mouth as I ran to find some bandaids.
My friends thought I was super gross, but I didnt know what else to do!

Oh, I had a question!
What precautions should you take to be sure your stitches dont rip!
Im kinda scared about that as well as all the bleeding and such!

As others have said its not as bad as you may imagine. I had all four of mine taken out at once, and I was expecting the absolute worse. It ended up being more of an annoyance than anything else. They should give you some pain medicine too so that will help. Just dealing with not eating what you may want and having that gauze in your mouth was the worst of it for me.

Just take precautions not to get any dry sockets. I've heard those are pretty painful. Your dentist should tell you all about it.

Hope all goes well for you.

How long did you look like a chipmunk?
Was it really painful after?
How long was it until you were able to participate in life's duties again?

4 days.. not that bad

eh..depends how you deal with pain.. most women are better with pain..will not hurt as bas after 24 hours

ummm..participate in life's duties...ummm the next day dude...

it ain't a labatomy!

is it?

but they knocked me out, then gave me the local.. so i do not remember the big needles.

My brother just had that done. He came home and he was still loopy from the anthesthetic it was really funny. He said he was going to read his book and he started reading it outloud. He prounounced all the words funny cause he was swollen and I was laughing at him and joking with him but he ignored me which is totally unlike him. He kept getting up and walking around but he couldn't remember where he needed to go. I told him he didn't need to go anywhere but he ignored me. Later when he was less loopy he asked me what happened and he couldn't remember doing any of that. He said it only hurt for a couple of days but IDK.

They might give you stitches that are designed to fall out naturally(those were the ones I got). As for them "ripping out" I've never heard of that happening so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm not sure how that would happen realy...do you regularly stick sharp pointy objects that far back in your mouth? You can ask your dentist just to be sure if it makes you feel better.

If you are just gentle with what you eat and how you change your bandaging, you should be fine. Don't eat hard foods, obviously. Don't drink through a straw (that can cause dry socket, which they will probably tell you about).

My stitches came out on their own as well. I didn't even have a follow-up visit.

Just a funny side note. You already know I'm sure to have someone else there to drive you back home.

When they gave me the knockout gas and I counted down to 9 from 10, the next thing I remember was waking up in my bed four hours later. It's just really wierd losing a chunck of your memory. They must have dragged me from the chair to the car and then my girlfriend somehow got me from the car to my room.

Gee, I had it really easy. I had two at a time pulled. They were not impacted. They just used novocaine. I had almost no swelling and never filled the prescription for the pain medicine.

I hope that you have it as easy as I did.

missionarybelle

ditto. i have to get mine out soon

my friend came to stay with me for the first few hours after her surgery and it wasn't too bad for her. she slept the whole time and I just kept going in and out to change her ice packs. she made sure to keep a little bucket/dish thing near her and she just kept spitting into that when she got a lot of blood/spit in her mouth and then I would periodically flush it down the toilet.

so find someone to take car of you and administer your meds/clean up after you and you should do great.

LOL

getting mine pulled was nothing. the only annoying thing was having those gauze pads in my mouth and having to spit out blood for the next few days. pain killers helped with sleep. no big deal really. then again, i'm not scared of needles at all. i'm more willing to accept the pain i guess because i know it needs to be done, so just do it and get it over with. plus faith in God and my eternal soul means pain is only temporary. agony brings you closer to Christ!

the only thing i think one might be scared of is when they actually have to hold on to your head like in a headlock to twist and pull out the tooth. it's actually quite daunting how much force they use. i'm surprised they didn't put their foot on me for leverage. on one i think they had to drill the tooth into pieces, then pry each piece out in every which direction like it was in a maze. btw, my cousin was the dentist and very gentle, so i imagine any other dentist would probably have been worse and less caring. boy you must be scared now huh!

anywho, i'd rate it a 2 compared to the utter pain i felt when i had my teeth cleaned for the first time in a long time, which i'd rate a 10. it had been so long that she had to really dig into my bleeding gums to get the plaque. no anesthetic of course, so i had a lot of tears running down my sides.

i have never in my life prayed so hard because of the pain. i was doing Hail Mary's like it was my hour of death! must've been like 20 minutes or so. i suggest you do the same because it got me through it without complaining once. she even apologized for the pain she must have been causing.

have fun!

Personally, I only had to spit out blood for the first day I think. It's hard to remember, because of the hydrocodone or whatever it was that I was on. The person taking care of the patient will remember that process a whole lot more than the person having his teeth taken out :)

One funny side note - Since I had just gotten back from the monastery, my really good friend from middle school/ high school wanted to come hang out and when she found out I was having my wisdom teeth out she decided that she'd bring me a get-well gift as an excuse to come over. Well, I was totally drugged when she came with her parents the DAY after my surgery (it was like an hour's drive for her!) and, because of the meds, I do not remember our visit except for staring at her on my couch.

It was only a couple of hours for me. I remember because I didn't have any memory loss with mine. I guess the Navy didn't drug me up that much.
