Wow... I Had No Idea How Expensive Some Furniture Is...

Best bet is, is to go to the local town furniture stores and snoop for some handy deals.

Remember, you don't need to get fancy right away. If you are stuck with a crappy couch, find a cheap, yet cool sheet or fabric, and cover up the couch.

You have to work with the little things. Watch HGTV or go on the internet for cheap furniture ideas.

garage sales are the way to go. I wouldn't recommend them for matresses though.

$40 for a table and six chairs at a garage sale
$10 for sandpaper
$10 for paint thinner
$10 for stain
$20 for paint
$10 for varnish/sealant

$100 set of table and chairs. I'm cool like that. :)

eBay and Freecycle. There have been about 3 offers on my local freecycle for couches lately. We got a solid oak dining table & 4 chairs off of eBay for $200, too.

I'll warn you - you and your future Mrs. Murphy might regret biglots. We got a mattress from big lots and it screwed our backs up and only lasted 1 1/2 years before we had to throw it out (no, they did not honor the warranty). Go to Original Mattress factory. You can get a well built mattress there very inexpensively, it will cost a bit more, but still be affordable, last much longer, and you'll get your moneys worth.

Used furniture is the way to go - its built better. We bought a couch at Ikea but only because it was a display model and they disounted it like 5 times (we like it).

Edit: Here are the prices at OMF

Twin $174 - $212
Full $306 - $346
Queen $327 - $379
King $430 - $515

I don't know what others think, but I really would encourage you to spend an extra $80 for the mattress. Also, if you talk to mattress experts they tell you to avoid the so called mattresses that you don't have to flip (they simply use half the material in them) and pillowtops which quickly wear down and are not replacable (we had a Serta Pillowtop from Biglots). You are much better off spending $30 on a pad that can be replaced.

Why didn't anyone tell me it was daylight saving time? Now I'm at work an hour and a half early. Oh well. More time to pray the rosary!!

Now to figure out how to get a couch...
Ikea is a good deal, don't dismiss their stuff so quickly.

Hmmm...I was dismissing their couches...but that mattress is a good deal. Any idea if it's a good mattress?

Also, it says a slatted bed base is necessary...does that mean I wouldn't have to buy a foundation mattress, I could just get 2x4s and lay them in the frame as the mattress support? That would save me about $100 if I didn't have to buy a foundation...

Ikea is in Houston and they are worth the drive. You can get their mattress and then a platform bed frame from another souce or put it on the floor until you find one like or can afford.

I had a garage sale sofa that worked great for me. Garage or better yet estate sales are the way to go on sofas.

My son got the mattrress, box springs part and screw-in legs for under $300, definitely worth it.

Somehow I think driving to Houston is a bad idea for me right now...

Make sure all of the middle-aged women at your church know you are desirous of furniture. They'll have an excuse to talk their husbands into buying them a new couch when they give their lightly-worn couch to the poor, almost-married fellow from church.

:P
 since when!?!

seriously though, it happens in other places too. I once saw a toilet out on the curb.

Have you looked at garage sales? maybe not for the mattress, though.
